EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team kicked off its rivalry weekend with a decisive 3-0 shutout win against Michigan State on Friday afternoon (April 2) at Ralph Young Field. With the win, the Wolverines improved to 5-0 in Big Ten Conference games.

It was the third straight shutout for the Wolverines and the fourth in eight games this season. Michigan (6-2, 5-0 Big Ten) held the Spartans without a shot until the fourth quarter, outshooting them, 23-1, and outcornering them, 11-0, in the contest.

Two of U-M's three goals came off their corner attack, but it was sophomore Sarah Pyrtek who scored the first and game-winning tally on a solo effort from the field at the 4:30 mark. Pyrtek corralled the ball off a Michigan State (1-9, 1-5 Big Ten) defender at the top of the circle and sent a reverse chip through traffic and bouncing just inside the far-right post for her team-best third marker of the season.

Senior Kayla Reed and freshman Anouk Veen cushioned the Wolverines' lead with penalty-corner tallies in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. Reed laid out to tip in senior Halle O'Neill's shot, sending it cross-cage high to the left post at the 38:48 mark for her second goal of the season, while Veen notched her first collegiate goal at 51:22, burying the direct shot through traffic and to the board. Graduate student Clare Brush and junior Kathryn Peterson earned assists for the top and the insert, respectively.

Junior goalkeeper Anna Spieker did not have to make a stop en route to the shutout performance -- MSU's lone shot missed wide -- while the Spartans' Jade Arundell earned 11 saves.

The Wolverines will wrap up the rivalry series with a non-conference slate against Michigan State at 1 p.m. on Sunday (April 4) at Ralph Young Field. The game will be streamed live on Big Ten Network+.
