IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team used late goals in the second and third quarters and a stingy shutdown defense in the fourth to knock off No. 4 Iowa, 2-0, in the Big Ten Conference Tournament semifinal on Thursday evening (April 22) at the Hawkeyes' Grant Field. It was the Wolverines' ninth straight win and eight shutout of the season, including seven over their current win streak.
With the win, Michigan advanced to the Big Ten Tournament championship game for the 14th time in 23 seasons. The Wolverines, who are seeking their seventh tournament title in program history, will face Ohio State, which defeated Northwestern, 2-1 in overtime, in the other semifinal matchup, at 11 a.m. CDT on Saturday (April 24) at Grant Field, broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
Michigan set the tone early and largely dominated play through the opening three quarters but did not break through until the final minutes of the first half, at the 28:09 mark, when junior Sofia Southam scored her first goal of the season after a self-start just outside the circle. Bumped hard to draw the foul, she used a quick start to take the ball into circle and send a bouncing reverse chip to the lower right corner of the cage.
Junior Katie Anderson appeared to give the Wolverines a two-goal lead midway through the third quarter, but her goal, which deflected in off an Iowa defender, was waived off on review -- called too high and wide of the cage.
The Wolverines got it back a few minutes later, at 42:34, off the penalty corner. Senior Halle O'Neill took the insert and fed it across the corner, where Anderson applied another stop, and freshman Anouk Veen wound up and stepped into a hard shot. It was deflected high by an Iowa defender and then down into the goal by another Hawkeye; it was Veen's third goal of the season.
Iowa turned it on in the fourth quarter, drawing four penalty corners and outshooting Michigan, 3-1, in the frame. Junior goalkeeper Anna Spieker made two big stops off back-to-back corners early in the quarter then slid out to clear a loose ball minutes later.
The Hawkeyes pulled their goalkeeper for an extra attacker with five minutes remaining, and U-M turned away one more late penalty corner, holding Iowa without a shot after junior flyer Tina D'Anjollel and O'Neill got their sticks on both the initial and second-effort attempts.
Michigan outshot the Hawkeyes, 8-6, in the contest, while Iowa held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners after its fourth-quarter surge. Junior goalkeeper Anna Spieker posted three saves for her eighth complete-game shutout, while Iowa's Grace McGuire stopped three of five U-M shots on goal.
