NEW ORLEANS – Two out rallies and great pitching are a tough combination to beat.
St. Augustine had both working Thursday night and the result was an impressive 2-0 victory over Jesuit at Wesley Barrow Stadium in a game seen live at CrescentCitySports.com.
Louisiana Tech signee Kenya Huggins lived up to his lofty expectations, pitching a gem.
Huggins (2-2), throwing 90-92 mile an hour fastballs, along with cutters and breaking balls, stymied the Blue Jays on three hits over 6 2/3 innings, striking out 12.
“I just know that we were 0-5 in district and we had it on our mind today to come out here and get it done,” Huggins said. “I knew I had it (good stuff) in the ‘pen. I knew it when I started throwing. Normally, when I have to start sweating in the bullpen. I got real loose before going out there. I had the best defense behind me.”
Huggins had to depart with two outs in the seventh inning, having reached his maximum pitch count at 114 pitches.
“I was so frustrated,” Huggins said. “I have not finished a game at St. Aug and I wanted to do it tonight.”
Genesis Prosper came on and walked Hayden Morris but struck out pinch-hitter Canaan Clayton to get the save.
The big two out hits came in the first and second innings and they proved decisive.
St. Augustine (13-10, 1-5) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of first inning. With two outs Ryan Porche walked Shannon Martin before Kabrel Johnson doubled to deep left, scoring Martin. Johnson was 2-for-3 to pace the St. Aug offense.
The Purple Knights added a run, again staging a two-out rally in the bottom of the second as Ryan Stripling singled and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Nijal Johnson to make it 2-0.
“I didn’t do anything special, it was all a testament to the kids and striving to play a complete game,” St. Augustine Barret Rey said. “Today, I challenged them in my pre-game. I asked them to give me two and a half hours of concentration and 300 pitches and we’ll come out on top. We got timely hits. I didn’t let up on Kenya. I told him he had to set the tone and carry us into our first district win.”
Jesuit (23-3, 3-3) had chances to score in the second and third innings.
Tripp Haddad and Holden Hess singled to start the second inning but Huggins then struck out the side. In the third, Giovanni Licciardi tripled with two outs but Huggins struck out Dartmouth commit Zack Casebonne.
Ryan Porche (5-1) pitched extremely well in absorbing his first defeat, allowing just two runs on four hits with just one walk and six strikeouts. Porche retired the final 10 hitters he faced.
Both teams are scheduled to play Catholic League games Saturday with St. Augustine traveling to Archbishop Shaw at 1 p.m. while Jesuit will host Archbishop Rummel at 1 p.m. in a game that you can listen to on 106.1 FM NASH ICON and at www.nashfm1061.com.
