It’s only been three games into the 2021 MLB season, but the early returns on the Padres’ new trio of pitchers are looking to be right in line with what everyone hoped they’d be.
In his first start back in his home state, Joe Musgrove struck out eight batters through six innings and Ryan Weathers fanned another three in as many innings to help blank the Diamondbacks 7-0 on Saturday night in Petco Park.
After going hitless through the previous two games, Machado recorded his first hit of the new season on a solo home run over the right field fence in the opening inning. Not soon after, Ha-Seong Kim recorded his first MLB hit with an RBI single to left, pushing the score to 2-0.
From there, it continued to be all Padres all night long.
In the second, Wil Myers drove in two of his three RBIs on the night with a well-placed double in to center field. Fernando Tatis easily skated home and Tommy Pham showed some serious gas to make it around the bases from first.
Machado and Myers would each go on to bring home another score in the fourth and sixth inning, respectively. In the bottom of the sixth, Jake Cronenworth got in on the fun with a RBI double to left, bringing home Myers for the game’s final run.
Weathers recorded his first career save in the majors after allowing just one hit in his 38 pitches on the night. He saw notable success making batters chase up high, notching two of his three K’s throwing up above the strike zone.
Opening pitch for the fourth and final game of this home series is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. this afternoon. Chris Paddack will be making his first start of 2021 against the righty Taylor Widener.
