FARGO — Cade Feeney fired a three-hitter and Peter Brookshaw drove in the game's only runs as North Dakota State defeated Western Illinois 2-0 on Friday in a Summit League game at Newman Outdoor Field.
Feeney improved to 4-1, needing only 116 pitches to close out the complete game. He walked three and struck out five. It was the Bison's first nine-inning, complete-game shutout since Blake Stockert defeated Western Illinois 2-0 in May 2018.
The Bison broke a scoreless tie in the third when Jack Simonsen hit a one-out double to right center field. Calen Schwabe walked and Jake Malec singled to load the bases. Brookshaw's sacrifice fly to right scored Simonsen, and Bennett Hostetler walked to reload the bases. But Leatherneck pitcher Jace Warkentien got a fly out to contain the damage.
The Bison added a run in the fifth when Malec hit a two-out single to right, stole second and came around on Brookshaw's double to left-center.
Feeney did the rest. He set down the Leathernecks in order in the sixth, seventh and eighth, and surrendered just a one-out single in the ninth. He struck out two in the inning and got a force out at second to end the game.
The Bison, playing their first home game since May 17, 2019, have won two straight since a mini-skid in late March and early April. A March 21 road loss to the Leathernecks snapped an eight-game winning streak and NDSU was 4-4 in the eight games that followed at Oral Roberts and Omaha.
The Bison (8-5 in the Summit, 19-8 overall) and Leathernecks (5-8 Summit, 9-17) play a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Saturday and wrap up the four-game set at 1 p.m. Sunday.
