COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team celebrated its Senior Day with a resounding 6-0 win over Indiana, keyed by the play of sophomore Mackenzie Allessie, who had her second hat trick in as many games this weekend.
“It was a great way to celebrate Senior Day and for this team and honor our seniors,” said head coach Jarred Martin. “To win again at home with a shutout is a great indicator of what we did on the offensive end creating shots but also how our team worked together on defense to limit chances.”
Allessie, a sophomore from Mount Joy, Pa., had two first-half goals and another in the fourth quarter to finish off a weekend in which she scored six times. Other Buckeye goal scorers on Sunday were seniors Sammy Stone and Niki Trzaska along with freshman Lotte Algra.
After a scoreless first quarter, Allessie put two on the scoreboard for the Buckeyes in the second quarter. She scored 12 minutes apart, once at 16:46 and again at 28:24, to stake Ohio State to a 2-0 halftime lead. Her first score was assisted by Trzaska while the second was unassisted.
After generating just three first-half shots, the Buckeyes turned up the offensive pressure in the second half. In the third quarter alone, they took seven shots on goal and scored three times to extended their lead to 5-0. Stone started it when she redirected an Emma Goldean shot IU goalie Shannon McNally at 34:00. Seven and a half minutes later, Trzaska scored off a feed from Sarah Charley and then Algra found the back of the cage from the top of the circle in the 45th minute.
Allessie finished off her hat trick in the 58th minute with an unassisted tally. It was her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Freshman goalie Abby Danson earned her second shutout of the weekend. The defense in front of her limited IU to just two shots after holding them without one on Friday.
Following the game, Ohio State honored four seniors: Stone, Trzaska, Maura Hunter and Julianna Sweeney.
“It was poetic to have our two senior captains also score today and contribute to the team win is an added bonus,” said Martin. “Nikki and Sammy have done so much for this program over their time here and we are in a better place as Ohio State Field Hockey because of their efforts and selflessness. It was also great to see Mara and Julianna as we honor the four members of the class of 2021. They are amazing young women who I have had the privilege to coach. They have bright futures ahead in their respective fields and I can’t wait to see where their next steps lead them. This group holds a special place in my heart as the incoming class when I got the job at Ohio State and I have been fortunate enough to see them grow as hockey players, as leaders, and as young women. This year is different in a lot of ways, and I told the seniors that we have games left here at home and within this season. The exciting parts are still approaching and I am glad our senior captains are leading us to this final push.”
The Buckeyes finish out their home schedule next weekend when they host Michigan State on Friday (3 p.m.) and Sunday (noon).
“We have two very important weekends coming up, starting with hosting Michigan State,” said Martin. “I like how we are playing with the style, the passing, and the scoring efficiency. We will continue to push ourselves at practice to stay aggressive with our play and our decision making. You want to be playing your best as the season draws towards the end and I believe that’s what we are doing so I am excited to see where this goes.”
