Bartlett's seniors gave the Hawks a lift.
Seniors accounted for a goal and 2 assists as Bartlett broke a scoreless tie in the second half and defeated Glenbard South, 2-0, in an Upstate Eight Conference boys soccer matchup at Millennium Field in Streamwood Monday night.
After a first half that saw the Hawks with just 1 shot on goal, they came out on fire after the break. Andrew Nava and Brayam Fonseca scored 8 minutes apart, providing more than enough support for senior goalkeeper Israel Cuautle and the Bartlett defense.
A Raiders' foul helped jump-start Bartlett. Sebastian Larios took the free kick and played it right to the net where Nava was waiting and headed it in for a 1-0 lead.
"We got a couple of dangerous free kicks on the side, and Sebastian putting a lovely ball that close, and Andrew Nava, one of our shorter guys in the back, wanted it more than everyone else, and buried it," said Bartlett coach Vince Revak. "I think that really gave us some extra momentum to finish out the game."
The second Bartlett goal was equally artistic as Cesar Palomares crossed it from the deep corner to Fonseca in stride who knocked it in.
Palomares had a chance at a goal of his own minutes later but was denied on a diving save by Glenbard keeper Kamil Walawender, who also stopped Nava's bid for a second goal.
Bartlett's defense responded when the Raiders started pushing up late. Spencer Medendorp broke up a would-be breakaway by the Raiders' Jake Larson with a slide tackle. After Dario Stojakovic just missed the net with a header, Cuautle stopped Owen Lange from close range.
"Sebastian Gluzsak and Spencer Medendorp at the center did well," Revak said. "We had a lot of guys on the outside, including Andrew and David Ramirez, that played extremely well tonight. It helps that it was senior night. That little extra that, usually you give up at the end of the game when it's a regular-season game, I think they pushed themselves tonight because of that."
Glenbard South had a flurry of scoring chances in the first half but couldn't convert. Cuautle's diving save denied Kian Sandoval in the opening minutes and the defense broke up the rebound attempt.
The Hawks' best scoring chance came right at the end of the half when Petryk Pabian, after a long run up the left side, crossed to William Poulopoulos in perfect position in front of the net, but his shot just missed wide right.
Bartlett moved to 3-6-1, 3-3-1, with 2 games remaining in the abbreviated season.
