STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team picked-up their second-straight win thanks to a clean 7-0 sweep over Sacred Heart University on Wednesday afternoon at the Magic Lincer Tennis Academy in Manchester.  The Huskies are now 2-1 on the young season.

"The team had a nice win today against a very good Sacred Heart team," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall.  "The team had a great start in doubles, with each team putting pressure on their opponents early, and never looking back.  That momentum carried over into our singles matches, where we won the first set on all six courts.  Overall, it was a great team win, and I was very pleased with how we competed.

UConn set the tone in double play with a clean sweep of all three matches. Sophomore Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) and freshmen Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) rolled out to a 6-0 win over Laruen Santarsiero and Keira Tobia.  The point was clinced at No. 1 where junior Julieanne Bou (Baymon, Puerto Rico) and freshman Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) won 6-1 over Brianne Lauria and Ciara O'Toole.  The sophomore tandem of Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) and Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) closed out the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win over Katsiaryna Starastsenka and Flavia Rambaldi.

In singles, Bou got her win first, beating Lauria 6-0 and 6-2 at No. 1.  Cook was next up with a win at No. 4, beating Santarsiero 6-1 and 6-2.  Hoppe earned a 7-6 (8), 6-2 win over O'Toole at No. 2 to clinch the win for the Huskies.

Takunyaci won her No. 5 match with Rambaldi, 6-3 and 6-2.  Junior Luciana Rabines (Barcelona, Spain) earned a hard fought three-set win at No.6 over Tobia, 6-3, 3-6 and 10-7.  Lai also won a three-set battle with Starastsenka, 7-5, 4-6, 10-8.

"Each of our freshmen had first time wins today," stated Marshall.  "Leonie had her first singles win, with a great effort today after a very close first set and Aleksandra had a nice win in doubles with her partner Caroline.  I am happy for them, and this will be the first of many wins for them in a Husky uniform."

Next up for the Huskies will be a home match at Magic Lincer Tennis Academy against Siena College, Saturday at 1:30 pm.
