ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Nine different Wolverines scored a goal, and goaltender Strauss Mann stopped all 21 shots he faced as the University of Michigan ice hockey team rolled to a 9-0 win over Michigan State on Friday night (Jan. 8) at Yost Ice Arena.

The decisive win marked Michigan's fifth in a row over their in-state rivals, and the lopsided margin is the widest the series has seen since Jan. 30, 1993, when the Wolverines beat the Spartans, 11-1, at Joe Louis Arena.

Thomas Bordeleau got the scoring started, putting the Wolverines ahead, 1-0, 5:08 into the first period. He received the puck below the goal line before stickhandling out to the front of the net to open the Michigan State netminder's five-hole and slid the puck between the pads with a backhand to the back of the net. Cam York and Brendan Brisson picked up assists on the goal.

Two and a half minutes later, (6-5-0, 4-5-0-1 Big Ten) Michigan went on its first power play after a Michigan State (4-5-2, 3-5-1-2 Big Ten) roughing penalty. After regrouping a number of times, the advantage expired and MSU returned to full strength. Shortly after the penalty ended, the Wolverines maintained possession in the Spartan end and worked the puck over to Nick Blankenburg at the right point. The junior defenseman squared up and ripped a quick shot from beyond the circle that found the back of the net to double the U-M lead to 2-0 with 10:13 left in the opening period. Owen Power and Kent Johnson assisted on the goal.

Minutes later with the ice seemingly slanted in Michigan's favor, Johnny Beecher carried the puck into the zone and skated down the right side before snapping a low shot from below the dot past the MSU netminder to score U-M's third goal at 11:34 and chase the Spartan goaltender. York picked up his second assist of the night, while Mann collected his first point of the season with a secondary helper. After 20 minutes, Michigan led, 3-0.

Early in the middle frame with the teams playing four-on-four once again, the Wolverines capitalized to push their lead to 4-0 at the 3:38 mark. Michael Pastujov deftly received a pass on his backhand in the slot, and the senior -- playing in his first game as an alternate captain -- wasted no time before dialing up a wrist shot to beat the Spartan goalie. Keaton Pehrson recorded the assist.

Minutes later on the power play, with the referee's arm raised to signal a delayed penalty, the Wolverines potted their fifth goal of the evening. Johnson ripped a shot from inside the left circle, that Beniers tipped as he was creating a screen to the right of MSU's netminder. Garrett Van Wyhe got the puck and put it past backup tender at 7:31.

After 40 minutes, Michigan led, 5-0, and maintained a 27-5 advantage in shots on goal.

The Wolverines continued to dominate the play, notching a pair of third-period goals in quick succession. Captain Jack Becker scored his first of the season 6:22 into the period off an assist from Eric Ciccolini to go up, 6-0. Twenty-eight seconds later, it was Matty Beniers who made it 7-0 following a blue-collar shift near the blue paint. Becker picked up an assist, and Johnson added his third helper of the night.

Michigan's eighth goal came when Johnson went full speed to the front of the net before he forced the puck across the goal line and tumbled into the net himself. Power and Mann picked up their second assists of the game. With time waning and confidence bubbling, U-M finished its offensive onslaught with defenseman Jay Keranen scoring his first collegiate goal goal at 17:49 of the final frame. The assists came from Jacob Truscott and Johnson.

As the final horn sounded, the scoreboard read 9-0. In the contest, Michigan outshot MSU, 44-21, while also owning the face-off dot, 38-26. With the win, Michigan moves to 6-5 on the season and sits in fifth place with 11 points in nine Big Ten games.

The Wolverines and Spartans will square off on Saturday (Jan 9) in the series finale at 4:30 p.m. inside Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
