ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Night activities were not the only reason to cheer on Saturday night (Feb. 19) inside a sold-out Yost Ice Arena, as the second-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team defeated No. 11 Ohio State 3-0 to earn the weekend sweep of the Buckeyes.

Sophomore stalwart Erik Portillo notched his third career shutout, turning aside 30 shots to earn his 25th win of the season.

Ohio State (21-11-2, 12-8-0-1-2 B1G) started off a penalty-filled period by taking a boarding minor at 6:17 to give the Wolverines the first man-advantage of the evening. The Michigan power play threatened in the OSU end but ultimately was unable to open the scoring before the visitors returned to full strength.

Back at five-on-five, the Wolverines found a way to capitalize on their hot start when Philippe Lapointe buried a rebound at 8:37 while crashing the net from the left flank to put U-M ahead 1-0. Keaton Pehrson picked up the lone assist for putting a shot on OSU goaltender Jakub Dobes.

The Buckeyes were sent to their third power play of the evening with 32.6 seconds left in the opening period but failed to beat Portillo before the first intermission.

After one period of play, Michigan held a 1-0 lead, with a 16-10 advantage in shots on goal. Each side was 0-for-3 on the power play, but the Buckeyes still had 1:28 of carryover time remaining on their third chance.

Just before the expiration of Ohio State's carryover advantage, senior Jake Gingell was driven into the boards in the corner by an OSU skater, who was given a major penalty and a game misconduct for checking from behind. Despite pressuring for extended periods, U-M could not capitalize.

Luke Hughes continued his torrid scoring pace with a highlight-reel goal to double the U-M lead with 6:28 left and the teams at full-strength. Jack Summers and Mackie Samoskevich assisted on the play, which saw Hughes carry the puck end-to-end through the Ohio State defense. He crossed the blue line and stickhandled around the last defenseman before faking out the goaltender, depositing his 16th goal of the season into the back of the net to give Michigan a 2-0 advantage.

At the second intermission, U-M had built a two-goal lead with a 26-23 advantage in shots on goal. The teams were a combined 0-for-11 on the power play, while Michigan held a 32-16 lead in faceoffs after winning 18 of 21 draws in the second period.

The Wolverines continued to dictate the pace of play throughout the third period. With the Ohio State net empty and the Buckeyes in desperate search of a goal, Mark Estapa collected the puck in the neutral zone and fired a long-range strike into the abandoned cage to ice the game and bump the score to 3-0 with 2:49 left in regulation.

Despite some extracurricular activity and a handful of post-whistle penalties after the final buzzer sounded, the Wolverines secured the sweep to maintain pole position in the Big Ten standings. U-M now has 51 points with 16 regulation wins and three overtime losses to stay two points up on Minnesota.

Next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 25-26), the Wolverines will hit the road to close out the regular season with a pair of games at Notre Dame. Friday night's (Feb. 25) contest is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday's (Feb. 26) rubber match will begin at 6 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on Peacock.
