CHAPEL HILL – Four Tar Heel pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout of No. 25 East Carolina at Boshamer Stadium as North Carolina blanked its instate foe for the first time since 2012 with a 2-0 victory.

Max Carlson picked up the win after holding ECU (1-5) to four hits with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched. The Carolina bullpen then limited the Pirates to a single hit in the final 3.1 innings and fanned six of 12 batters faced to seal the series victory following a 7-4 triumph here on Friday.

The Tar Heels (6-0) mounted a two-out rally in the fifth inning to score the game's only two runs. After Reece Holbrook drew a one-out walk, Vance Honeycutt singled to put runners at first and second with two outs. Angel Zarate then delivered a two-run double off the base of the center field wall to plate both runners.

ECU threatened to score with runners at first and second with two outs in the sixth, but Shawn Rapp came out of the bullpen to strike out Josh Moylan and end the threat.

Alec Makarewicz got the Pirates' final hit of the game with one out in the seventh. Davis Palermo pitched the next 1.2 innings for UNC and retired all five batters he faced. Caden O'Brien then struck out the side in the ninth to seal the win.
