In the latest trend to captivate social media, people are searching for their own names on Urban Dictionary and posting the positive and not-so-positive “definitions.”
For those unfamiliar with Urban Dictionary, it is an online glossary originally created to explain slang terms.
Over the course of its 22-year existence, the site has grown to define political terms, video games and, in this latest trend, human names.
The entries are also not what you would find in more standard dictionaries, such as the Oxford English Dictionary or the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
They often are submitted by anyone and vetted by volunteer editors, so the grammar is not perfect and there can be NSFW language. In Urban Dictionary’s definition of “name,” for example, it contains all of the above.
Here is how the Urban dictionary name trend began and how you can find your very own definition.
The Urban dictionary name trend started when Instagram user @bymayuuu posted the prompt “Show us your name in Urban Dictionary” and his query quickly went viral.
From there, Twitter and Instagram users have been posting these name definitions on their social media profiles.
For example, @eviljordan tweeted that his name as listed in Urban Dictionary means that he is a “kind and loving person who is very funny, [stylish] and attractive.”
Looking up your name on Urban Dictionary is a straightforward process.
All you have to do is type your name into the top search bar on Urban Dictionary’s website. Then, choose your correctly spelled name from the drop-down list and you will be taken to the page which defines your name.
Depending on how common your name is, you may have hundreds of submissions to page through, so if you do not like one definition of your name, you are bound to find at least one positive definition of your name.
