CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 1 seed Oregon State men's soccer team opened NCAA Tournament play with a 2-0 victory over St. John's (NY), at Lorenz Field on Sunday. The Beavers improve to 13-2-3 (7-1-2 Pac-12) and will advance to the Third Round for the first time in program history.
"I'm really proud of the group. We played a good first half, and in the second half St. John's stepped up their pressure. I think there's times we could have been better with it, but it's something we'll build on. I was quite pleased with the first two-thirds of the field, I think we need to continue to execute in the final third," said head coach Terry Boss. "St. John's is big, they're strong, they're physical, we give them a lot of credit. Scouting them, we put a lot of extra work in because we knew they had quality and I thought our guys dealt with it well. It's a physical fight at times, but our guys did a good job trying to control the game with the ball."
"By and large, 2-0 at home in your first outing, these guys had one tournament game to get under their belt and this was an important result for us to come away with a good performance. Of course we're always going to want more. We're pleased with the progress that the group is making and continuing to be brave enough to play the way we want to play from the first whistle to the last whistle," said Boss.
Sophomore Mouhameth Thiam found the net first with a rebound from redshirt sophomore Carlos Moliner's shot, to put the Beavers up early in the first half. As fog settled in throughout the second half, sophomore Javier Armas scored with a shot off his right foot from junior Sofiane Djeffal's corner to put the Beavers up, 2-0.
The Oregon State defense held St. John's to three shots per half, none of which were on target. Throughout the match, the Orange and Black marked eight shots on goal out of 15 shots total and took seven corner kicks throughout the game.
