WILBRAHAM – After the Belchertown girls’ soccer team found success, the boys’ team followed right behind them in the MIAA Division 3 state tournament quarterfinals with another win on Saturday.

The top-ranked Orioles blanked No. 9 Greater New Bedford, 2-0, in a game shortened due to lightning and poor weather conditions. The game was played long enough for Belchertown to claim victory as an official contest, with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation.

The Orioles will play No. 5 Cardinal Spellman in the Div. 3 semifinals at a date and time to be determined.

Even though weather halted the game, Belchertown looked confident in its win on the turf at Minnechaug.

The Orioles finished with a total of 10 shots on goal whereas Greater New Bedford only managed two. On top of that, Belchertown earned seven corner kicks.

The Orioles controlled possession throughout the contest, giving them a solid attacking plan. Many balls were sent out wide to create open space in the middle which resulted in success starting in the first half.

Belchertown’s Jack Holt made an incredible run out left weaving in and out of defenders and as he did one final spin to direct him toward the goal, Holt jumped on the opportunity to score. From five yards past the outline of the goal box, Holt boosted a curling shot that ended up finding the bottom left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead with 17:06 to go in the first half.

The next scoring sequence didn’t come until the 12:35 mark in the second half right before the officials decided to call the game due to hazardous weather conditions. As Belchertown gradually brought the ball down the field, Holt was open. He gathered the ball and drove forward more, finding a gliding Kaden Houle coming down the right side of the field. Houle trapped it, gathered, and then sent the ball flying past the goalkeeper to double the lead to 2-0.

For the majority of the game, Belchertown secured the ball out of its own territory, and only minutes after the second goal the game was interrupted by a vibrant flash in the sky that forced a delay in action that ultimately became a stoppage.
