When it comes to art, the mantra often says less is more. A few months ago, a sculptor garnered megabucks for pieces nobody could see. Yes, invisible art. A Danish artist paralleled this concept when he earned $84,000 for his two blank canvases. By the way, I would have crafted the same for a lot less money.

The Kunsten Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg, Denmark, commissioned Jens Haaning to recreate his pieces from 2007 and 2010, two canvases covered with cash reflecting average incomes of Austrians and Danes. Show me the money and I could craft a collage of greenbacks the average Americans fork over yearly for gasoline, health care and food. Of course, the backdrop would cover several cargo ships loaded with containers waiting to be offloaded.

Haaning, 56, dubbed his unequally sized two canvases “Take the Money and Run.” No surprise, the museum wants the $84,000 returned and is giving him until Jan. 16 to make restitution. Wonder what the odds are of the museum recuperating its money. It’s not like his earlier work where they could’ve plucked the euros and kroner from the canvases and call it even.

My art expertise consists of no-talent-required dot painting whose requirements are a steady hand, tools, paint and a surface to plop circles of various sizes and colors on. The exorbitant cost of rocks and supplies makes selling for a profit downright impossible. I call myself the Dotting Diva but no heavily endowed art institution is beating a path to my studio (the kitchen table) with a deal.

I’d be over the moon to break even. Yet if I want to stack the deck in my favor, I could do one of two things: bill the art as invisible or show a surface devoid of painted dots and call it “Use Your Imagination.”
