With Luis García at his best, Astros blank Twins 4-0 - The Crawfish Boxes

Luis García was an absolute stopper on Saturday night, showing an effective, dominant version of himself against the Twins. Thanks to what he did on the mound, the Astros defeated the Twins 4-0 to snap a three-game losing streak.

García, who got their eighth win of the season (8-6), needed only 85 pitches (58 strikes) to go through six scoreless innings of two hits, no walks, and eight strikeouts. This performance not only comes in handy for the team but also for him, as García allowed 14 hits and 10 earned runs over 9 1/3 innings over his last two starts.

The 24-year-old starter was painting corners beautifully and using as few pitches as possible. Among his highlights of the night, García struck out four consecutive hitters and didn’t allow a hit until Brent Rooker’s one-out double in the top fourth. Besides, the righty got 18 swings and misses (second-best number for him). He retired the last five hitters he faced to end his outing.

Offensively, the Astros didn’t look that comfortable against opponent starter Michael Pineda, but figured things out to score two runs that at some point looked like enough with García on the mound.

In the second inning, they hit three singles in a row to bring in the first run of the game. A bit later, in the bottom fourth, Yordan Álvarez launched a massive solo shot over the right-center field fence for his 50 career home run. With 184 lifetime games, Álvarez became the fastest player to reach that mark in franchise history. He broke Lance Berkman’s record with 231 games.

After that, it was a combination of filthy pitching and two more runs. The magical trio formed by Ryne Stanek, Kendall Graveman, and Ryan Pressly combined for three more zeroes while Aledmys Díaz hit a two-run double to make it 4-0 in the eighth.

This four-hit shutout is a pain reliever for the Astros, who lost five of six games prior to Saturday Night. They will try to split the series this Sunday when they collide with each other at 1:10 pm CT, which will mark the final Astros - Twins of the 2021 regular season.
