IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team used a pair of penalty-corner tallies to defeat No. 11 Wake Forest 2-0 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge finale on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 29) at Iowa's Grant Field. It was the Wolverines' second ACC/Big Ten Challenge sweep since 2017.
Senior Tina D'Anjolell, the Wolverines' corner insert, had a hand in both Michigan tallies. She broke through with the first and game-winning marker at the 13:24 mark late in the first quarter. Fifth-year senior Halle O'Neill put the initial shot into the goalkeeper's pads, and the ball rebounded to the left and straight to D'Anjolell, who knocked it back into the open cage.
O'Neill added one of her own early in the third quarter, at 32:25, burying the direct-corner shot to the lower-left corner of the Wake Forest (0-2) cage. D'Anjolell earned an assist on the insert; she posted a pair of goals and a helper on the opening weekend.
Michigan (2-0) narrowly outshot the Demon Deacons 5-4 and outcornered them 3-2. Senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker posted three saves en route to her first shutout victory of the season, while Wake goalie Tori Glaister stopped two of four U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines will hit the road again next Sunday (Sept. 5) when they take on in-state foe Central Michigan at 1 p.m. at Cristy Freese Field in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
