CLOVERDALE — Avenging a 12-7 loss to Cloverdale last month at Wes Martin Field, the Middletown Mustangs blanked the Eagles 12-0 on their home turf Tuesday afternoon to remain near the top of the North Central League I varsity baseball standings.
The game was called after six innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
Middletown and Cloverdale were two of five teams tied with 5-3 records going into action Tuesday, one game behind league leader Fort Bragg (6-2). Middletown (6-3 league, 10-6 overall) pounded out 14 hits and received strong pitching from starter Dax Green and reliever Will Aden in its victory.
“I told them before the game that everyone’s beatable in this league and just take care of it one game at a time and things will shake out,” Middletown head coach Jon Hoogendoorn said. “Our guys are hungry.”
Middletown didn’t waste any time taking the lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first, which was more than enough run support for Green. He pitched four shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four and walking three. Aden worked the final two innings, allowing one hit, striking out four and walking three.
“We put some pressure on them, put some stress on their pitching,” Hoogendoorn said of the Eagles. “Dax came out on the mound and did what he does.”
The Mustangs broke the game open with a five-run fourth to go up 8-0. They added another run in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Aden doubled twice and drove in three runs. Tanner Pachie (3-for-4, RBI) and Tyler Crudo (3-for-5, 2 RBIs) added three hits apiece for Middletown, and Luke Hoogendoorn went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Middletown hosts Clear Lake on Friday at 4 p.m.
In other baseball action Friday:
Sonoma Academy 7, Upper Lake 6
At Santa Rosa the Sonoma Academy Coyotes scored four times in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the Upper Lake Cougars in NCL II action at Doyle Park.
“We outplayed them the entire way,” Upper Lake head coach Brian Milhaupt said of the Coyotes. “There were four calls that didn’t go our way (in the seventh). It spiraled out of control from there.”
Diego Velasco went the distance for Upper Lake, striking out seven and walking only one.
“I feel bad for Diego,” Milhaupt said. “He pitched a great game.”
The Cougars (5-3 league, 5-4 overall) erased a 2-1 deficit with a five-run top of the fifth. The big blow in the inning was Rocco Bassignani’s bases-loaded double, which scored all three runners.
Bradley Sneathen (2-for-2) was the only Upper Lake player with more than one hit.
The Cougars are off until next Tuesday when they host Anderson Valley at 4 p.m.
