COLUMBUS, Ohio— Fueled by a pair of Sophie Shirley goals and a 28-save shutout by Kennedy Blair, the top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team earned a convincing 5-0 win over No. 4 Ohio State on Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink.
The Badgers (1-1-0, 1-1-0-0 WCHA) raced out to a 2-0 goal lead with a pair of tallies in the first eight minutes of the first period.
Freshman Maddi Wheeler potted her first collegiate goal two minutes into the game after fellow freshman and linemate Makenna Webster sliced through the Ohio State (2-2-0, 2-2-0-0 WCHA) defense and found a wide-open Wheeler in front of the net.
Six minutes later, Britta Curl tapped in the puck off feeds from Delaney Drake and Nicole LaMantia to double the UW advantage.

The Badgers had a prime opportunity to add to their lead late in the period after OSU's Tatum Skaggs was given a game misconduct which resulted in a five-minute power play for UW, but the Badgers were unable to convert.
After a scoreless second, Sophie Shirley scored on a rush early in the third period to give UW a 3-0 lead before adding an empty-net strike.
Sophomore Dara Greig rounded out the scoring for Wisconsin, adding a late tally with 40 seconds remaining.
Three Notes of the Game
- It was a big day for Badger freshmen as Maddi Wheeler, Makenna Webster and Katie Kotlowski all earned their first collegiate points.
- Shirley became the 18th player in school history to score 50 goals in her career, a day after she became the 27th Badger to record 100 career points.
- After being outshot 36-24 on Friday, the Badgers outshot OSU 30-28, including a 17-9 advantage in the opening frame.

Head coach Mark Johnson:
On bouncing back:
"I think certainly the first period the way we started helped us to score first, we came out with a lot more energy than we did yesterday which, you know, the first period we were on our heels quite a bit but, we watched some tape this morning and had a good first 20 minutes. Obviously when you score people get excited, so I was happy. And then second and third period was typical on the road hockey, grinding it out, banging and killing penalties and doing things like that. Overall I was happy, certainly our goaltender played very well today and really earned a shutout."
On having games under the belt:
"We've practiced 50 times but especially being at Ohio State where the rink is smaller, they play a very aggressive style. You haven't played many games or any games up to this point, you know that first period coming in or they're going to throw the kitchen sink at you, especially coming out. There was a nice win up in Minneapolis for them last week. We learned some things yesterday but the most important part of it is we got some game experience and we've got a couple games under our belt. We can move forward in a positive direction and try to get better."
Senior goaltender Kennedy Blair:
On a shutout against a top ranked opponent:
"I think it was good, I think it all came from the offense defense really helping me in the front, I think they played really well on the defensive zone and the offense as well. So I think I give it to them but it feels really good to get a shutout in my first win as a Badger."
On her first weekend as a Badger:
"It's been a lot of fun, a different experience for sure. I enjoy being on this team, all the girls are very supportive, I love that."
On change from yesterday:
"I think we had a good start. Coming into the game that was one of our biggest things. As a team we wanted to come out hard and come out fast and making sure we were getting pucks to the net and I think once we did that the goals started coming and we came out on top."
On getting her 100th point and 50th goal:
"It means a lot. I think a lot of it goes towards my linemates with Brette (Pettet) making the really nice pass to me there and then I just had to do the easy work, putting it in. I credit all that stuff to my linemates in helping me get to where I've come."
On how it feels to leave with a series split:
"It feels good obviously. Yesterday was kind of tough and I think after a good regroup together as a team we kind of sat down together and got together what we wanted to do for today and once we did that I think it was good and we came out on top."
UW continues its four-game road swing with a trip to No. 3 Minnesota on Dec. 4-5 in Minneapolis. Puck drop on Friday is set for 6 p.m. while Saturday's contest begins at 4 p.m. Both games can be seen live on Big Ten Network +.
