ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team defeated Arizona State, 3-0, on Sunday night (Nov. 15) to sweep the Sun Devils at Yost Ice Arena. Standout junior netminder Strauss Mann made 17 saves to earn his first shutout of the season.

Freshman Kent Johnson, fresh off of a four-assist performance in his debut Saturday (Nov. 14), put the home team ahead, 1-0, with his first collegiate goal just 2:30 into the contest. Thomas Bordeleau and Jack Becker collected the assists on Johnson's rebound goal from the slot.

After the early marker, special teams were front and center the rest of the opening period. The Wolverines (2-0-0) killed off a hooking minor at the 6:31 mark and were unable to capitalize on a pair of power-play opportunities.

However, With just five seconds left in the opening period after an extended shift in the ASU (0-2-0) end, Matty Beniers surveyed his options from behind the net before finding Eric Ciccolini crashing into the slot. Ciccolini ripped a low shot through the goaltender's five-hole and into the back of the net to double the Michigan lead to 2-0. Beniers and Keaton Pehrson collected the assists on the late goal. After one period, the Wolverines were up two goals while outshooting the Sun Devils, 17-6.

The second period featured back-and-forth action with more rough-and-tumble play, but neither team was able to light the lamp. After 40 minutes, the Wolverines maintained their 2-0 lead while extending their margin in shots on goal to 33-9.

On its fifth opportunity of the night, the U-M power-play unit converted in the middle of the third period. Brendan Brisson received the puck in the neutral zone from blue-liner Cam York before stopping to find the best pass as the play developed. Jimmy Lambert came streaking through the center of the ice and received a crisp pass in stride from Brisson. Lambert took an extra step before rocketing a wrist shot off the crossbar and in for his first tally of the season at the 7:14 mark to give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead.

Perhaps the best chance for the visitors came with 8:45 remaining in the regulation when they had a wrist shot hit the post while on the power play. Spirited play filled out the remainder of a contest in which Michigan cruised to victory and a convincing sweep. Mann's shutout, the seventh in his career, moved him into a tie with Bryan Hogan (2008-11) and Jim Keough (1967-69) for sixth all-time in program history. The Wolverines outshot the Sun Devils, 47-17, for the game and 84-33 for the series.

Next week, Michigan will hit the road for their first games away from Yost when they face off against Wisconsin in Madison on Thursday and Friday (Nov. 19-20). Puck drop for both games is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST. Thursday's game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Detroit, while Friday's contest will air on Fox Sports Detroit Plus.
