A pair of good scoring chances came for each team in the first five minutes of the first as Montreal nearly converted a deflection in front and the Flyers pressured Carey Price a Travis Konecny rebound chance.
The Flyers’ third shot of the game would be money, though, as Jakub Voracek tipped home a Claude Giroux shot past Price to make it 1-0 less than six minutes in.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi nearly answered for Montreal a few minutes later, but his wrist shot rang off the post behind Carter Hart. Same shift and it was Brett Kulak’s turn to ring one off the iron behind Hart as the Canadiens came oh-so-close to an equalizer.
A high-sticking call would give the Flyers an extended power play but Montreal was able to kill of the double-minor without too much hassle thanks in large part to an uneventful first half of the advantage from Philadelphia.
Jeff Petry would give the Flyers another chance on the power play late in the period and another chance to extend the lead before intermission. But like the first chance, this one would too go by the wayside as Montreal earned another kill to send the Flyers power play away empty yet again.
After 20 minutes the Flyers carried the only goal to break with Voracek’s opener being the lone tally on the board.
The best chance to start the second came for Canadiens as Scott Laughton served one up right out front of his own goal, but Hart made a big save to bail out an uncharacteristic awful turnover from the forward.
Konecny would pickup a penalty 4:21 into the second as a result of a cross-check he threw gunning for positioning in front of Price as the second line buzzed. The Flyers penalty kill would do the job on this one, though, having given up a power play goal in each of the first two games in the series.
With 11:11 left in the second Matt Niskanen would put the Canadiens right back on the power play with a bad pinch to earn a tripping call. As the initial call winded down, Hart got too much on a clearing attempt and sent it right over the glass for a delay of game.
That minor would be nearly killed off when Joel Armia picked up an interference call with 22 seconds left as the officials decided that they simply weren’t getting enough airtime.
Getting plenty of airtime was Hart, bailing out his pal Laughton, this time after Laughton set up Jonathan Drouin for the grade-A chance.
Voracek’s goal still the only one for either team through 40 minutes with the Flyers hanging on to the 1-0 lead.
That lead looked tenuous early as Kotkaniemi hit the Canadiens’ fourth post of the game in the first minute of the third. Thankfully this isn’t a Mighty Ducks movie, and the puck must go in to count, folks.
Still clinging to a 1-0 lead in the third, the Flyers would get another power play as Max Domi decided to give Kevin Hayes the old spear to the chest.
Shocking, we know, but the Flyers’ power play was ineffective once again as another chance to get an all-important insurance goal went by the wayside.
And with 9:32 remaining the Canadiens would again put the Flyers’ paltry power play unit on the ice as Hayes was dumped once again, though this time in a more hockey-related play.
No shots on that power play as the Flyers were really just using the time to try and salt away some clock knowing full well that the Canadiens’ penalty kill just couldn’t be penetrated in any possible way. That’d be 0-for-6 on the night, just a total flat liner in a 1-0 game with less than seven minutes left.
A couple strong shifts in-a-row down the stretch from the Sean Couturier line after one from the Hayes line put Montreal with no choice but to empty the net in search of a tying goal.
Nothing would be doing as the Flyers were able to finish things off with Hart making one more key stop to earn the shutout in a 1-0 win to take Game 3 and take the series lead, 2-1.
