If University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh wants to return to the NFL, Mara must act quickly and boldly. As the Giants franchise flounders under his stewardship and rumors fly about the next general manager and Joe Judge’s fate, finding a way to reel in Harbaugh would change everything about the Giants present and future.
Here are five reasons why Mara should already be preparing a blank check for Harbaugh:
Great coach: Let’s not dance around this. It was popular to rag on Harbaugh’s Michigan tenure prior to the 2021 season, but expectations at that program aren’t always on par with reality. Harbaugh won 69 percent of his games in the NFL, including taking the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl. Then he went to Michigan and resurrected a program that wasn’t close to championship caliber for years. Harbaugh’s first head-coaching gig was at Stanford in 2007. Since that season, Harbaugh owns a 90-45 collegiate record and 44-19-1 NFL mark. That equals out to a 134-64-1 record.
Instant credibility, and a fighting chance in a well-coached NFC East: Despite Judge’s best efforts to curb this feeling, the Giants are looked at as a clown show right now. That’s what happens when a decade of poor football takes over a franchise. And while the NFC East isn’t considered a great division, look at the coaches the Giants will be up against in 2022: Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy (Super Bowl champion), Washington Football Team’s Ron Rivera (former NFL Coach of the Year) and Eagles’ Nick Sirianni (Coach of the Year candidate in his first season). If the Giants don’t find a credible coach soon, things will stay bad.
Brings some of the Parcells, Coughlin toughness that it’s clear Mara wants in a coach: Mara has a type. It’s a tough, no-nonsense guy that (if you didn’t know better) could be mistaken for your New Jersey neighbor. That was Bill Parcells. It was Tom Coughlin. It has been Dave Gettleman and Judge. Harbaugh, unlike some of the potential candidates this year in the event Judge is canned, fits the bill. It just so happens that he can coach.
Would energize the fan base again: Giants fans are apathetic right now. Who can blame them? The franchise feels rudderless, especially when reports about Judge and quarterback Daniel Jones returning for 2022 leak out. This whole thing feels hopeless. Harbaugh would change that the minute he walked through the door.
Could help lure a star quarterback: Why would a superstar like Russell Wilson want the Giants? Other than the bright lights and opportunity New York brings, it’s hard to understand why. Harbaugh, a former NFL quarterback and coach that helped Alex Smith turn his career around and Colin Kaepernick reach his highest heights, is a draw for potential veteran quarterbacks this offseason.
