RUTLAND, Vt. – Five different players scored, and Tate Brandon turned away all 25 shots he saw for the Skidmore College men's hockey team in a 5-0 victory over New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) foe Castleton on the road on Friday.
Skidmore's second consecutive 5-0 win improves the Thoroughbreds' record to 9-6-1 and 5-4-1 (16 points) in the NEHC. For the moment, Skidmore sits tied with Elmira and Norwich for third position in the conference. The Spartans are 4-12-1 and 0-9-1 (3 points).
Besides the five Skidmore goal-scorers, Zach Frisk and Joe Biddle contributed two assists apiece. Brandon's shutout was highlighted by a perfect 4-for-4 mark on the penalty kill. It's Brandon's third shutout of the season.
Austin Rook opened the scoring with six seconds remaining on Skidmore's first power-play opportunity on a wrist shot inside the left post. Devon Mussio and Mike Gelatt assisted. Then, Callahan Johnson made it 2-0 just 58 seconds later when his shot from the high shot took a fortuitous bounce off a Castleton stick.
Freddie Illias scored his first goal and point at 7:51 of the second period on a one-timed slap shot from the blue line through traffic. Zach Frisk caused a turnover inside the blue line to set up the goal and Matt Rutigliano dished it to Illias. Everett Wardle extended his team lead in goals to eight when he made it 4-0 with 5:20 left in the second period. He picked up a loose puck inside the hash marks after a Castleton blocked shot.
Jack Strauss completed the scoring with 54 seconds remaining on a short-angle wrist shot after Freddie Macciocchi raced across the offensive zone for the intercept. It was Strauss's first goal and Macciocchi's first assist.
Skidmore will turn around and host Cortland on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the regular-season non-conference finale.
