ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team used a first-half goal from senior Raleigh Loughman and an insurance tally from junior Dani Wolfe with five minutes to play to cement a 2-0 win over No. 24-ranked Penn State on Thursday (Oct. 21) at U-M Soccer Stadium.

The three points give U-M 17 in the Big Ten standings and put U-M in the driver's seat to earn a top-four spot and host a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal matchup. With the win, the Wolverines are in third place, with Michigan State (16 points) and Iowa (15) in fourth and fifth, respectively, with one match remaining.

Michigan (11-3-3, 5-2-2 Big Ten) got on the board first in the 18th minute, as senior Sarah Stratigakis possessed a ball on the right side of the pitch, sending service to Wolfe on the near touchline. Wolfe then played a ball to Loughman that was slotted home lower-left for the U-M's first marker of the contest.

At the end of the first half, U-M owned a slight possession advantage over the Nittany Lions 55-45 percent and led in the shot column 6-4, with three of the Wolverines' shots on goal.

Tweet of the Match

Loughman was just inches away from her second of the night in the 55th minute, as she collected a failed clearance at the top of the box. She one-timed a right-footed shot that rang off the crossbar and was eventually cleared to safety by the PSU backline.

Penn State (10-6-0, 4-5 Big Ten) came out for the second half chasing a goal and had its best opportunity with a clear chance 10 yards out that was lifted high and over the bar.

Wolfe's hustle sealed the match in the 85th minute, as a relatively harmless ball was served from the back by senior captain Alia Martin. A Nittany Lion defender played the ball back to the PSU goalkeeper, and her attempted clearance deflected off a bounding Wolfe and bounced high and into the goal.

Beall made three stops in goal for her fifth clean sheet of season. U-M moves to 5-0 when scoring two goals in a match, and with a 13-9 advantage in shots, improved to 10-2-2 when outshooting opponents. The win was the first over a ranked opponent on the campaign.

Michigan closes out the regular season on Sunday (Oct. 24) at noon, when it hosts Maryland for Kick-or-Treat at U-M Soccer Stadium. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
