MILL CREEK — Nate Hulver ran for 140 yards and added a 100-yard interception return for a score as Tygarts Valley blanked rival Pocahontas County 20-0 Friday night at Bulldog Field.
With the victory the Bulldogs improved to 4-5 on the season and snapped a two-game losing streak. The setback was detrimental to the Warriors’ playoff hopes after being ranked No. 18 in the Class A ratings this week.
Pocahontas County, which dropped to 5-4 with the loss, looked poised to strike early in the contest as a 46-yard pass from quarterback Braedan Hayhurst on the first play of scrimmage moved the visitors deep into Tygarts Valley territory.
The Warriors moved the ball all the way down to the 3-yard line of the Bulldogs and were threatening on a third-and-goal when Hulver picked off a Hayhurst pass in the end zone and raced all the way down field for a 100-yard touchdown.
Early in the second quarter, Tygarts Valley extended the lead to 13-0 when Walker George capped off a 10-play, 37-yard drive with 3-yard touchdown run.
The Bulldogs iced the victory with 4:51 remaining in the contest when Garrett Gibson, who collected his 10th interception of the season in the contest, scampered into the end zone on a 31-yard touchdown run.
Gibson followed Hulver, who ran the ball 22 times, in rushing for the game with 54 yards. Tygarts Valley had 221 yards of offense on the night, all of which came on the ground.
Hayhurst finished 6 of 12 through the air for 45 yards passing and Frankie Burgess had 38 yards rushing on nine attempts for Pocahontas County, which will travel to Midland Trail next Friday.
The Bulldogs will entertain Doddridge County in their regular-season finale the same evening.
