ASHBURNHAM — Unbeaten no more.

The Oakmont Regional football handed visiting Hudson its first loss of the season Friday night in convincing fashion as the Spartans dominated the Hawks, 27-0, under the lights at Arthur I. Hurd Memorial Field.

Oakmont climbs above the .500 mark with the win, improving to 3-2,  while Hudson drops to 4-1.

“Our boys came ready to play tonight. We’ve been waiting for this game,” first-year Oakmont head coach David Kaizer said. “We hadn’t played a full 48 minutes before tonight’s game. Tonight, we played 48 minutes and got it done.”

Hudson hit the field Friday night as the top-ranked team in Massachusetts Division 6 football in the MIAA power rankings. At the time of kickoff, the Hawks were narrowly ahead of second-ranked Bishop Fenwick  of Peabody and third-ranked North Reading.

Oakmont entered as the ninth-ranked team in Division 6.

The Spartans controlled both sides of the football and took advantage of a punishing ground game led by senior Joe Gray, who found the end zone twice.

“He just gets it done. He puts his head down and that’s what we need with what we do,” said Kaizer. “You need a guy who is going to go out there and say you can try to tackle me and we’ll see what happens. He still has a lot of work to do but we played well tonight.”

The ground-and-pound attack of the Spartans allowed the hosts to chew up quite a bit of clock in the first half. Oakmont’s offense only touched the football twice in the first half but still managed to run 28 plays.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Oakmont got on the scoreboard with the only points of the second quarter. A 15-play, 75-yard drive was capped by a 21-yard touchdown run by Gray to make it a 6-0.

It stayed that way into the third quarter. After forcing a Hudson punt, the Oakmont offense took over at its own 32. Three plays later, Gray rumbled his way through the Hudson defense and found paydirt from 60 yards away. Sam Curtis added the point after to make it 13-0 with 7:20 left on the clock.

The Spartans added to the lead on their next possession. This time Curtis connected with Cam Breton for a 36-yard touchdown pass before adding the point after to make it a 20-0 score with 1:53 showing on the clock.

Oakmont’s defense, which was stout all evening long, put the game away with a turnover midway through the fourth quarter. After Breton put a hit on Hudson quarterback Jake Attaway, Oakmont’s Connor Rollo scooped up the loose ball at the Hudson 15-yard line and scurried his way into the end zone. Curtis finished his strong night kicking as he added the extra point to cap the scoring.

“I’m fired up for the kids,” said Kaizer. “I challenged our defense. Nobody has been able to challenge the Hudson quarterback, we’ve watched film and I’ve been to two games. Nobody has hit him and we hit him tonight.”

Oakmont will look to keep things rolling when it travels to Groton-Dunstable Regional next Friday.
