LUNENBURG — When you are the brand new coach of a talented high school team, connecting with your veteran players right out of the gate is a key. Lunenburg field hockey coach Hailee Attorri says her core of six senior captains has made her rookie campaign a breeze.

And onWednesday night, those captains were honored in a postgame ceremony after the Blue Knights celebrated Senior Night with a 2-0 win over Mid-Wach C rival Fitchburg.

“I got lucky. I inherited this team,” said Attorri. “They are terrific. As a new coach, they welcomed me and set the tone for the rest of the team.”

The seniors honored were Angela Dumford, Jessica Handy, Emma Infantino, Caroline Laine, Macie Mannone and Autumn Tibbetts. On Wednesday, midfielders Tibbetts and Laine were exceptional and allowed Lunenburg to dominate the middle of the field and stay on the attack for extended periods.

“(Tibbetts) has a great understanding of the game and great ballhandling ability,” said Attorri. “And she’s not afraid of the close contact. She’s tough.”

The win over Fitchburg moved the Blue Knights to 9-2-1 on the season, including 4-0-1 in their last five.
Fitchburg dropped to 3-6-2 overall.

The Red Raiders have dropped three straight and have managed to score just one goal in their last four games. Forwards Annika Gendron and Ruby Reid played strong games and generated several excellent scoring bids, only to be frustrated time and again. On one particular play, Gendron stickhandled through and around three Lunenburg defenders, then cut in from the left side. But her shot was just wide and slammed into the side of the goal.

“I thought we had a good effort tonight,” said Fitchburg assistant coach Lucia Antocci. “We got plenty of shots. They fought hard, they just didn’t finish.”

Both of Lunenburg’s goals came in the first half. The first came in the 11th minute, as the result of some outstanding ball movement. Gendron set the play in motion with a pass from the top of the circle to Bethie  Boone who made a quick move toward the right corner of the goal. But her move was only to draw over Fitchburg goalie Julia Boudreau. Rather than shoot, Boone slid a pass across to a wide-open Caitlin Ware, who easily scored into the vacated goal to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Lunenburg doubled its lead on a goal by Sarah Viveiros, who got a stick on the ball during a scrum in front of the goal. The play was set in motion by some fine ball movement by Handy.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the field, Lunenburg goalie Malia Ruggiero was on top of her game, turning aside seven shots to record her sixth shutout of the season.

Fitchburg is back in action on Monday at home against Bromfield. Lunenburg plays again Wednesday, on the road against Mid-Wach C powerhouse Littleton.
