The Cardinals continued a three-game set with the Cubs on Saturday, playing game two on a rainy night in Chicago. Kwang Hyun Kim started for the Cardinals and pitched well yet again, tossing six scoreless frames while striking out seven and surrendering five hits and one walk. Zach Davies took the bump for the Cubs and was tagged for three runs, two of which came in a fifth inning where the Cardinals put five runs on three homers from Paul Goldschmidt, Tommy Edman, and Paul DeJong. The Cards bullpen then closed the door with minimal drama as the Cards cruised to a 6-0 win.
1st Inning
Dylan Carlson led off for the Cardinals and flew a 2-2 sinker to center for the first out. Paul Goldschmidt followed and drew a walk on six pitches. Nolan Arenado jumped on a first-pitch sinker and flew it to deep left for the second out. Tyler O’Neill drew the second walk of the inning for the Redbirds, putting two on with two outs for Matt Carpenter, who tattooed a sinker to right field to score Goldschmidt for a 1-0 Cardinals lead. Yadier Molina worked a full count before chopping a changeup to third for the final out.
Wilson Contreras went down looking at a 1-2 slider that caught the outside corner to start the bottom of the inning. Kris Bryant singled on a ground ball that snuck under Paul DeJong’s glove. Anthony Rizzo flared a slider into center to put two on with one away. The threat was ended early, however, as Javier Baez Baltimore chopped a fastball to Carpenter who was standing on second and turned a 4-3 double play.
2nd Inning
Harrison Bader opened the second with a groundout to second for out number one. DeJong smoked a changeup for a long single into the left-center gap and moved to second after a sacrifice bunt from KK. Carlson then blooped a changeup into left for the last out.
Patrick Wisdom led off the bottom of the frame for the Cubs, striking out swinging at a 2-2 slider. Nico Hoerner chased a pitch way inside for strike three, but the ball got by Yadi who just tried to stab at it instead of trying to get down to block it. No threat materialized for the Cubs though as Ian Happ grounded into another inning-ending double play.
3rd Inning
Goldy laced a sinker back up the middle for a leadoff single. Arenado rolled a changeup to Baez, who made a phenomenal diving stop then threw to second for the fielder’s choice. O’Neill and Carpenter both went down chasing pitches outside the zone to send the game to the bottom of the third.
Sergio Alcantara swung over a 1-2 slider, striking out to open the home half of the third. Davies skied a slider to center for the second out. Contreras extended the inning with an infield hit that was scorched at Arenado. Bryant walked to put two on. Rizzo ended the inning with an adventure of a flyout to Carlson in right, who momentarily lost the ball in the rain before making a circus catch to end the frame.
4th Inning
Yadi started the fourth with a groundout to second. Bader beat out another grounder to second for an infield hit. DeJong went down swinging at a low changeup, but Bader swiped second on the strikeout pitch. KK bounced a changeup to Hoerner, who couldn’t get the ball out of his glove to make the throw, giving KK a single on a play that probably should have been an error. Bader moved to third on the play, putting runners at the corners for Carlson, who popped a cutter to short to strand both runners.
Baez beat out a soft grounder to DeJong for a leadoff single in the bottom of the frame. He then advanced to second on another wild pitch from KK that a younger Yadi likely would’ve blocked. Wisdom went down chasing a slider in the dirt for the first out. Hoerner popped another slider to second for out number two. Happ chased a 3-2 changeup to strand the runner at second.
5th Inning
Goldy obliterated a 2-0 sinker, putting it into the streets past left field to put the Cards up 2-0.
Arenado got under a changeup and flew out to right. O’Neill hit a swinging bunt down the third baseline and beat the throw for a single. The Cubs then pulled Davies and put in Adam Morgan to pitch. The Cards responded, pinch-hitting Tommy Edman for Carpenter to face the new lefty. After getting a gift in the form of a ball two that easily should have been strike three, Edman blasted slider into the seats past left-center, extending the Cards lead to 4-0. Yadi followed the home run with a groundout to third. Bader worked an eleven-pitch at-bat before looping a changeup into center for a two-out hit. Dan Winkler then replaced Morgan to finish the inning for Chicago and was welcomed by DeJong, who drove a fastball into the chain-link basket at the top of the wall in center for the third Cardinals home run of the inning and a serious 6-0 lead. KK was called out on strikes to end the road half of the frame.
Alcantara lined a fastball to Carlson for the first out in the bottom of the fifth. Jake Marisnick pinch-hit in the pitcher’s spot and popped out to third. Contreras went down swinging on three pitches for a clean fifth from KK.
6th Inning
Keegan Thompson got the call to pitch the sixth for the Cubs. Carlson struck out swinging to open the frame. Goldy walked on four pitches, reaching base for the fourth time in the game. Arenado and O’Neill both flew fastballs to right field for outs two and three.
Bryant flew out to center to lead off the home half. Rizzo smoked a slider to center but right at Bader for the second out. Baez tore a first-pitch fastball back up the middle to extend the inning, but Wisdom tapped a changeup back to KK to end the frame before the Cubs got anything going.
7th Inning
Edman grounded out to third to start the seventh inning. Yadi followed with a solid single to right field. Bader then grounded into a comical fielder’s choice and DeJong grounded out to third in a quiet Cardinals seventh.
Genesis Cabrera replaced KK in the bottom of the seventh and gave up a leadoff double to Hoerner. Happ popped out to Goldy for the first out. Alcantara then skied a fastball to right for the second out and pinch-hitter Robinson Chirinos went down swinging through a 2-2 fastball to strand Hoerner at second.
8th Inning
Rex Brothers replaced Thompson in the top of the eighth and Jose Rondon pinch-hit for Cabrera. Rondon skied a fastball to left for out number one. Carlson followed suit with a flyout of his own. Goldy reached on a throwing error from third as Rizzo couldn’t handle the throw in the dirt. Arenado then lined out to short for the final out as Baez made another impressive diving play.
Giovanny Gallegos got the eighth, as usual, and retired Contreras on a swinging strikeout with a 2-2 fastball. Bryant rolled a slider back to Gallegos for the second out. Rizzo then chopped out to second as the Cubs went down in order.
9th Inning
O’Neill led off the ninth with a strikeout, chasing a slider in the dirt. Edman did the same, chasing another bouncing slider. Yadi put the ball in play but popped out to second for the final out.
John Gant came in to close the game. Rafael Ortega, who subbed in for Baez on defense in the top of the frame, drew a six-pitch walk. Wisdom and Hoerner both flew out to right field and Happ struck out swinging, sealing the 6-0 win for the Cardinals.
After tonight’s game, the Cards and the Cubs are tied once again in the NL Central standings at 44-46, eight and a half games back of the Brewers. The series finale and final game before the all-star break is scheduled for 1:20 PM on Sunday, with Adam Wainwright facing off against Trevor Williams.
Quick Notes
As Buster Posey was placed on the injured list for the Giants and will be unavailable to play over the all-star break, Yadi was named to the NL roster. He declined, however, opting instead to take some rest over the break.
