Olympic athletes to watch

Basketball: Kelsey Plum will be key to Team USA's fortunes in 3-on-3 basketball. The Las Vegas Aces' guard averaged 13.5 points per game in the first half of the WNBA season despite missing the 2020 campaign altogether. That is on pace for her highest scoring average since being drafted first overall in 2017.

Gymnastics: Biles is two medals away from tying the American gymnastics record held by Shannon Miller. Biles is also trying to become just the third gymnast to win consecutive all-around gold medals. Her quest for those begins Saturday.

Top Olympic storylines

• For the first time since 1996, Michael Phelps won't participate in any swimming events for Team USA.
