The Marshalltown boys’ tennis team gave its seniors the spotlight for the regular-season finale, and those Bobcats responded to the challenge.
The Class 2A No. 7 Bobcats (10-2) blew through Fort Dodge and fired off an 11-0 triumph on Tuesday night, featuring the first varsity victory for senior Jake Vaughn.
Seniors Nicolas Price, Drake Davis, John Loney and Justin Melde each secured straight-set sweeps in singles play, while Ethan Benscoter, Nile Christensen, Drake Stalzer and Vaughn each served on a winning doubles tandem.
Eight of Marshalltown’s 11 wins were of the love-love variety, and the Bobcats’ 11-0 shutout was the sixth such loss for the Dodgers (0-10) this season.
The most competitive match of the night was Marshalltown junior Kevin Strand scoring a 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) win at the No. 1 singles spot over Luke Vaughan. The other five singles contests, including sophomore Jason Strand’s win at No. 2, were 6-0, 6-0 shutouts by the Bobcats.
The Strand brothers blanked Vaughan and Matthias Hippen at No. 1 doubles, Benscoter and Christensen swept Peyton Hays and Nathan Beekman, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2, while Stalzer and junior Colin Schmit scored a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3. Vaughn and sophomore Gavin Jablonski swept away their opponents at No. 4, and Fort Dodge forfeited at No. 5.
The Bobcats now have a week to prepare for their individual district meet, which will be held May 12 at Johnston.
