EDWARDSVILLE – Brynn Miracle scored the game’s lone goal in the 16th minute, as the Edwardsville Tigers opened the Metro Cup with a 1-0 victory over Waterloo.
Miracle scored on a penalty kick after a teammate was fouled inside the 18-yard box. Her shot went the opposite way of the Waterloo keeper’s diving attempt. It was Miracle’s second goal of the season.
The Tigers (5-0) are off to their best start in program history. They were undefeated through the first 13 games of the 2005 season, going 11-0-2 with ties in their first and 10th games.
Waterloo is 4-3-1.
Edwardsville wraps up the Metro Cup with a home game against Triad (7-0-1) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and a road game against Columbia (3-4) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
BASEBALL
Father McGivney 21, East Alton-Wood River 0 – The Father McGivney Griffins took out their frustrations of a three-game losing streak on East Alton-Wood River.
The Griffins scored a program-record for runs and banged out 12 hits in a 21-0, three-inning win over the host Oilers.
FMCHS (9-3) was coming off a three-game losing streak with losses to Granite City on Friday and two to Macomb on Saturday.
Against EA-WR (0-6), Father McGivney scored two runs in the first, four in the second and 15 in the third.
Jackson Rodgers went 2 for 2 with two doubles and four RBIs, while Austin Callovini was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Sam Choinard was 1 for 1 with two RBIs. Drew Sowerwine went 1 for 2 with five RBIs.
Clayton Hopfinger, Ryker Keller, Gabe Smith and AJ Sutberry each had a hit and RBI. Matthew Gierer was 2 for 2.
Keller earned the win, going three innings and allowing just one hit. He struck out four.
SOFTBALL
Edwardsville vs. Columbia, ppd. – The Edwardsville Tigers have moved their game against Columbia from Tuesday to Wednesday due to wet conditions. First pitch will be at 4:30 p.m. inside the District 7 Sports Complex.
