MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan softball team's one-one pitching punch of senior Meghan Beaubien and junior Alex Storako put on a dominant display from the circle, holding No. 23 Minnesota scoreless in a 3-0 series-opening decision on Friday night (May 7) at the Golden Gophers' Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. It was the Wolverines' ninth straight win.
The pitching duo combined for 14 strikeouts and allowed just four hits and a walk en route to Michigan's 15th shutout win this season. Beaubien (12-3) earned the start and the win, fanning eight and giving up four hits through five innings, while Storako, who entered with a runner on first and no outs in the sixth, struck out all six Gopher batters she faced for her first save of the season.
Beaubien and Storako teamed up to best Minnesota (25-8, 25-8 Big Ten) ace Amber Fiser, a 2019 first team All-American, also held Michigan to just four hits -- but two were solo home runs in the first and seventh frames.
Senior first baseman Lou Allan put the Wolverines on the board early with a two-out solo home run to left field -- her team-best ninth homer of the season.
Michigan (30-5, 30-5 Big Ten) kept building on its lead with tallies in the fourth and seventh innings. Junior catcher Hannah Carson also plated a run with two outs in the former frame. Senior shortstop Natalia Rodriguez narrowly beat out an infield single to short to lead off the inning, advanced on a groundout and scored when Carson roped a double into right field. Jimenez added more insurance with a solo homer of her own in the top of the seventh, going deep to left-center for her third long ball of the season.
Storako, who set Michigan's single-game record with 22 strikeouts at Michigan State on Wednesday (May 5), added six more to her season total in the sixth and seventh innings. She went looking-swinging-looking on 15 pitches to close out the game in the latter.
The Wolverines will resume their weekend series against Minnesota on Saturday (May 8) with a 1:30 p.m. CDT doubleheader at Cowles Stadium. Both games will be live on the Big Ten Network.
