This is a bittersweet day across the NFL. As hundreds of players are handed their walking papers, many others are rewarded for their hard work in training camp with a spot on a 53-man roster.
UCF Knights alums will experience both the joy and the agony today, and we’ll be updating this post throughout the weekend as former Knights find out that they have either made the team or have been waived. For the players in the second category, they could be claimed off the waiver wire by another team tomorrow. The deadline for teams to submit their waiver claims is noon Sunday. Any unclaimed player becomes a free agent.
3:52 p.m: Fullback Bruce Miller makes the Jacksonville Jaguars’ roster
Finally some positive UCF news today: Bruce Miller has made the Jags’ 53-man squad as a fullback after signing with them just three weeks ago. Miller, a seventh-round pick in 2011 following some great seasons as a defensive end at UCF, hasn’t played in the NFL since 2015.
3:05 p.m: Linebacker Nate Evans released by the Jacksonville Jaguars
Evans received some good reviews in camp, but he won’t be one of the 16 rookies on the Jags’ 53-man roster.
2:23 p.m: Cornerback Nevelle Clarke released by the Minnesota Vikings
Clarke’s father, Norman, broke the news on Twitter:
Velle was waived. Whether a player is better or not, big contracts and 1st-3rd rounders are priorities. Without preseason gms, quality vets are too. He’ll be fine though because of the rave reviews my many. I’ll update y’all in 24 hours.

I would consider this a surprise as Nevelle had performed well in camp according to beat writers, and some of them included Clarke in their final 53-man roster projections. Clarke received $115,000 guaranteed from the Vikings when they signed him in April, so assuming he clears waivers, I would expect Minnesota to stash him as one of the four weekly protected players on its 16-player practice squad.
1:09 p.m: Tight end Jordan Franks released by the Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals have released TE Jordan Franks, per @OSMG_LLC. Already receiving interest from teams for their respective practice squads.

Franks spent all of last season on the Bengals’ practice squad until he was called up to the active roster for the regular-season finale. He caught two passes in six games with Cincinnati in 2018.
1:10 p.m: Linebacker Shaquem Griffin released by Seattle Seahawks
Our Jeremy Brener covered this tough bit of news earlier today:
Earlier this week
A couple of Knights were released prior to today: Running back Adrian Killins Jr. and offensive lineman Wyatt Miller were cut by the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, respectively. MIller reached an injury settlement with the Cowboys on Friday.
Cowboys remove Wyatt Miller from injured reserve with injury settlement
