“Jeopardy” contestants still need to brush up on their football, at least in the SEC.
The quiz show referenced the Iron Bowl during the opening round of the Sept. 24., 2020 edition, but perhaps the greatest rivalry in all of college football hasn’t gone as mainstream as we thought.
In the category “’A' is for Autumn,” here is the $400 clue:
“Each fall Alabama & this SEC football archrival meet in ‘The Iron Bowl.’”
One contestant, Sameer, answered Arkansas. Sara and champion Robert declined to chime in, so we heard the dreaded triple-beep indicating no one responding correctly in time.
The correct response, obviously, is “What is Auburn?” Don’t forget to answer in the form of a question, folks.
This certainly isn’t the first time contestants have blanked on football facts during “Jeopardy!” with host Alex Trebek once hilariously ribbing a trio of players for failing to correctly respond to any clues in a full category about the sport in 2018.
In March 2020, referencing that quizzical calamity, Trebek introduced the category “Football” and prefaced by assuring the players he’d help them through it so as not to draw a complete blank with the five answers.
“Now last year, we had some difficulty with the football category, so we thought we would try it again,” Trebek said when he introduced it. “But in this category, it deals entirely with referee signals, and I’m going to be giving you three players the signals, OK?”
The players did a bit better, thanks to the host’s efforts.
The show has also referenced the Kick Six and Alabama’s dominant national title win over Notre Dame, so watch out for the next Iron Bowl reference.
