The final result, while important, wasn't the top priority.

The Jefferson City Jays hosted the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Tigers in a boys soccer Jamboree on Saturday morning at Eddie Horn Field. The Jays outscored the Tigers 3-0, but it was the things surrounding the Jamboree, not the scoreboard, that were the keys.

"The biggest thing is we were on the field, we hosted a game, we had a crowd with protocols," Jays coach Scott Blake said. "Those were the biggest things on our list for today.

"We just hope we get more of this."

On the field Saturday, the Jays looked pretty good in a lot of areas. They started the contest concentrating on the defensive side, then shifted to a more offensive philosophy.

"We looked decent defensively," Blake said. "But offensively, sometimes when you want the ball more, it doesn't look as good as you might want it to look. But we had to go there and there are things we need to do to look better."

Blake cited positioning and touches as things that needed improvement.

"And some of it is vision on the field, understanding if you have the ability to turn or not," he added. "We're OK with the system because with our experience, we're not teaching the system. The question is our decision making within the system and how we can best use our player personalities."

Zach Leary got the Jays on the board with a little less than five minutes left in the first half Saturday. Bassil Ahmed doubled Jefferson City's advantage about two minutes later.

Ahmed tallied Jefferson City's lone goal in the second half, that coming with about 11 minutes remaining.

Toby Hughes was in goal in the first half for the Jays, while Eli Chapman handled those duties in the second half.

Competition has been a rarity for the Jays, with just last week's Red and Black Scrimmage and a scrimmage at Capital City last month being the only two things on the schedule.

"It was good to get out on the field and just play," Blake said. "It's really what we need right now."

The Tigers presented a good preseason opponent Saturday.

"They do a great job of putting a team together and they know us pretty well," Blake said. "They've got a lot of good pieces on that team."

With the regular season slated to start later this week, the Jays don't want to get caught looking to far down the road.

"Everything we're doing right now is about getting the next practice, the next game, the next day at school," Blake said. "We just hope to continue forward."

The Jays were scheduled to play next Saturday at C.B.C. in St. Louis to start the season, but that game has been called off. Blake said the Jays will still start the season on the road that day, but the final details for that contest have not been finalized.
