Despite a patient approach at the plate that netted quality contact and four free passes against Wynot starter Dain Whitmire, the Cubs failed to get on the scoreboard in a 10-0 seven-inning loss at Cadwell Park.
Salem ends the season 8-17. The Expos set their focus on a semifinal game against Canova at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
“It’s a good feeling (to make the semifinals),” Wynot shortstop Jalen Wieseler said. “A lot of us young guys haven’t been here before. We’re just playing good ball together, good defense. Our pitching is doing really well, but I think our defense right now is really strong for us.”
Wynot’s defense kept momentum from potentially shifting in Salem’s favor early. The Cubs loaded the bases in the second inning, but Wynot right fielder Devin Lammers made a diving catch, followed by an inning-ending groundout to keep the game scoreless.
The Expos didn’t commit an error in the win, helping Whitmire toss seven shutout innings.
“That’s a big play there,” Salem left fielder Jon Forster said after he finished 2-for-3 at the plate. “If we tag up there and score one on that, it might change the whole game right there. … It definitely swayed their side on that one.”
Even as Salem starter Tyler Earls paved his way to three no-hit innings that brought his scoreless innings streak to 13.1 innings to start the state tournament, the momentum completely swayed toward the Expos in the fourth inning.
Wynot talked about what pitches Earls was throwing in certain counts and became familiar with his curveball that kept it off-balance the first time through the order. A no-hit bid turned into three runs in each of the next three innings.
Dawson Sudbeck’s leadoff single turned into the first run on Jackson Sudbeck’s RBI single. A batter later, Menno pick-up player Dylan Lehr doubled home two runs. Ryan Heimes scored on an error and Wieseler drove in two runs on a double to make it 6-0 in the fifth inning and drive Earls out of the game.
“You just trust your stuff,” said Wiesler, who finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs. “... You go back to the basics. You put the bat on the ball and it’s going to go. You don’t have to overswing. You just got swing real nice and it’s going to go for you.”
Earls left a five-inning start allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits. But Wynot’s bats stayed hot against David Kirby, who gave up a two-run single to Wieseler in the sixth inning to make it a 9-0 deficit. Lehr second hit of the game drove in the winning run an inning later.
The top-five batters in Wynot’s lineup all recorded two hits, including Dawson Sudbeck, Lee Heimes and Jackson Sudbeck. Salem finished with six hits.
Salem recorded back-to-back singles in the sixth inning, but grounded out to end the threat. It also put the game-extending run on when Isaac Anderson walked in the seventh inning prior to Cole Cheeseman’s fly out that ended Salem’s postseason run.
“We made a nice postseason run,” Forster said. “It took all season to put it together, but between districts and now, we made a nice run. … It’s a tough loss tonight. That’s not how we want to go out, but we’ll be back next year. We’re all good.”
Notes: Salem pinch hitter David Novak was ejected from the game in the seventh inning after arguing a strike three call.
