Although adults make up the majority of COVID cases, children are at risk for the virus, too. As parents and caregivers, we must do our part to keep our children safe and healthy. One way to lessen the infection from spreading is to wear a mask. Mask should cover the nose and the mouth, which can be intimidating for children.
If your child shows signs of distress or lack of interest in wearing the mask, there are ways to help. Here's how to bring out your child's creativity with a blank cloth face mask and get them to wear it!
Fabric
Surgical or medical equipment can be overwhelming. So don't be afraid to DIY a mask. Before you get started, allow your child to pick out their favorite fabric. Cartoon characters, sports teams, or their favorite color is an excellent place to start. Recycle old material is another way to be creative.
Old costumes or their favorite shirt that has grown to small may make a comfy mask; if you are purchasing masks for the family, give your child a few options and then let them make the final choice.
Comfort
Anyone who wears a mask for any length of time knows ear soreness, and face rash will inevitably be a problem. To avoid these cons to mask-wearing make modifications - attach the ear loops to ponytails or braids, add buttons to headbands or caps, or stitch buttons to elastic and attach cross the back of the head.
Decorate
Individualized personal touches make masks unique. Paint, markers, or jewels can make your child's mask feel like their own. Iron on appliques, sewing on letters, or pictures, the possibilities are endless. If your child is into imaginary play, make their mask into a costume.
They may have outgrown their favorite superhero costume, but it would look great as a mask with a cape. Princess wand, tiara, and a fabric mask from the outgrown princess dress may transform an ordinary day. Just make sure in doing so, you're not doing anything to damage the fabric and reduce its protection.
Familiarity
Dad's old bandana, mom's old t-shirt, can make fantastic face coverings. Just like us children love the familiar, wearing somethings of dad's is nostalgic. Pillowcases and blankets are viable options too, they help filter out some to particles and reduce the likelihood of infections.
The Buddy System
If your child is struggling to wear a mask, create one for their buddy. Your child's favorite actions hero, doll, or teddy bear may need protection from the coronavirus also. When their buddy is out in public and wearing their mask, it may make your child more likely to wear theirs. You can be your child's buddy, too – offering to wear a matching mask may bring a quick close to the battle.
Trial Run
After you decorate, give the child time to wear the mask a few times before you leave home if your child has issues of scratchiness or limited airflow practicing at home to fix any problems and give the child time to adjust to their new wardrobe accessory.
The Center for Disease Control recommends children over the age of two wear masks. The facial covering is a preventative measure to fight the coronavirus in conjunction with hand-washing and social distancing.
Masks do not need to be medical grade and can be made out of simple everyday items found in our home. If your child struggles to wear a mask, offering them the opportunity to decorate may ease tensions and be the solution to end the "masked" battle.
