Lancaster High School returned to play last week and registered a solid win at Memorial Stadium where the Bruins blanked Central of Pageland, 28-0 Friday, Sept. 17.

The Bruins, coming off COVID-19 quarantine for the second time this season, rebounded from a 22-18 road loss at Fairfield Central High of Winnsboro on Aug. 30.

LHS, snapping a nine-game skid dating back to the 2019 season, built a 7-0 halftime lead and finished strong for the win over the 1-2 CHS Eagles.

The LHS defense, which held CHS to two first downs, 36 yards total offense with three interceptions, stepped up big in the second half to put the Bruins’ offense in shape for pivotal points.

The lone score the Bruins needed came off a Ron Robinson interception, which led to Mikal McCollum’s 18-yard touchdown run with 2:47 in the first half.

McCollum, on the night, ran for 126 yards on 13 carries and scored three times.

“Our defense flowed well to the ball to make plays,” LHS coach Marcus Surratt said. “Our defensive coaches had us well-prepared and we executed the plan.

“We made some mistakes, but I like the way our players keep playing hard,” he said.

Special teams play triggered LHS’s second score, with JaRon Stevenson returning an Eagles’ punt 32 yards to the CHS eight.

Three plays later, McCollum powered in from 7 yards out for a 14-0 lead after Bruins’ kicker Johnny Zatarain drilled the second of his four extra points with 5:49 in the third period.

“We made key blocking adjustments at the half and our guys picked it up well and gave us some running lanes,” Surratt said. “We did the job in the trenches, which is vital for victory.”

Midway through the third period, Lancaster turned a turnover into points to pad its lead as Isaiah Ford returned an interception 26 yards to the CHS four. Ford had eight tackles and two sacks that night.

Two snaps later, McCollum bolted in from 7 yards out for a 21-0 lead with 7:12 to play.

Lancaster’s final points came late as LHS went 54 yards in seven plays, with Tae Truesdale going in on a 3-yard run with 1:13 left. McCollum’s 35-yard run highlighted the scoring drive.

Central’s best shot at points came after the Eagles’ Tijah Robinson picked off a pass and returned it to the LHS 17 late in the third period. But the Bruins’ defense came through with back-to-back sacks to snuff the threat on downs at the LHS 32.

“Anytime you win, it’s good,” Surratt said. “This reinforces to our guys that our hard work and consistency will pay off. We have to continue to work and improve.

“I know our players were glad to be back at it,” he said. “We were a little rusty early, but we picked up our play as the game wore on and finished strong. There’s work to do to eliminate penalties and mistakes, but we will take this and build on it.”

Lancaster might have had more points, but a Xavier Graham interception for a TD in the first half was nullified by a penalty.

Lancaster is back home Friday, Sept. 24, when LHS hosts White Knoll High School.
