What Syracuse’s leaders are expecting in upcoming I-81 plan: The state’s $2 billion plan to take down Interstate 81 and reshape Syracuse’s highway system has raised questions, and local leaders have raised concerns that range from public safety during construction to congestion during rush hours. Here’s a look at some of the issues local leaders, including Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh and County Executive Ryan McMahon, have been pushing for in recent months when it comes to I-81 – and what they’re looking for when the new version of the plan comes out this summer.
Once again, Walsh declares Skyline unfit for occupancy: Mayor Ben Walsh’s administration has declared the Skyline Apartment complex unfit for human occupancy for the second time, which could once again stop its owners from collecting public rent money on behalf of tenants.
St. Joe’s to require Covid-19 vaccinations for employees: St. Joseph’s Health is making all employees get vaccinated against Covid-19, becoming the first hospital in Syracuse to mandate the shots. Workers who don’t get vaccinated may be fired.
What caused tire damage to cars on Route 31? A tar-like substance destroyed the tires on at least four vehicles that traveled on Route 31 in Verona Friday. It has cost each car owner hundreds of dollars to replace the tires and some have spent hours trying to get the substance off the cars. What was the substance and where did it come from? That’s a mystery.
Looking Ahead
What new restaurants are coming to Thruway stops? Chick-fil-A, Shake Shack, Panera and Panda Express are some of the restaurant chains that are coming to the New York State Thruway’s service areas, the authority announced. The additions are part of the Thruway authority’s $450 million project to renovate 27 rest stops across the state.
Go hog wild, CNY: Bacon Festival is back: The annual Bacon Festival will be returning to downtown Syracuse this summer. Every vendor will be required to serve items containing bacon on their menus, from bacon burgers and bacon mac n’ cheese to bacon-wrapped scallops and bacon sundaes.
