DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers recorded their first shutout of the season as starter Matthew Boyd and three relievers combined to blank the Kansas City Royals 6-0 on Tuesday night at Comerica Park.
Boyd allowed only two hits over 5 2/3 innings, although he did walk four batters, including the last two he faced. Jose Cisnero, Buck Farmer and Bryan Garcia carried the shutout through the final out.
The Tigers scored three in the first to jump out to an early lead on Royals starter Jakob Junis, who failed to make it out of the third.
Miguel Cabrera had a double, homer and three walks, the first time he has reached base five times in a game since May 16, 2017.
Cabrera’s double to the left-center gap in the sixth inning off Royals reliever Matt Harvey had an exit velocity of 112.2 mph, according to Statcast, which is his hardest-hit ball since a double against Kevin Gausman on April 18, 2018.
The Tigers also got production from their two hottest hitters. First baseman Jeimer Candelario, who was named AL Player of the Week on Monday, had three singles. Shortstop Willi Castro had two singles and a solo home run.
Second baseman Niko Goodrum, in his first game since returning from the injured list, had two singles, a walk and two strikeouts.
The Tigers had opportunities to pad their lead, but left 11 runners on base.
The Tigers (21-26) and Royals (20-29) wrap up their brief two-game series on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m.
The game recap and box score are below.
