Cavaliers blank Hillsboro to begin conference slate - Chillicothe Gazette

CHILLICOTHE — Throughout the spring and summer months, like every program around the state, Chillicothe’s girls soccer group couldn’t work out together due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But after two games, and two decisive wins, that doesn’t seem to have mattered much.

In their Frontier Athletic Conference opener on Tuesday, the Cavaliers (2-0, 1-0 FAC) blanked Hillsboro by a 4-0 final — looking to be in midseason form and handling business as usual.

“We’ve seen a lot of girls, really, not drop off after having a spring or a summer,” Chillicothe coach Tyler Wickham said. “We had a lot of girls that were working at home over the summer and we had great participation with that. It’s just paid off that we haven’t really had to take time for the girls to relearn stuff. That’s just a testament of how hungry they are.”

With 22:59 left in the first half, sophomore Gemma Maimone got the Cavaliers on the board.

Maimone finding the back of the net isn’t an unfamiliar sight as she did so often as a freshman.

But it’s her play, combined with Addie Erslan’s knack for scoring, that makes Chillicothe dangerous.

“A lot of it comes from the attention that Addie gets,” Wickham said. “When she’s on the ball, she’s very clever, she’s very deceptive and she makes great decisions. I’ve had three or four coaches come and tell me that she sees the solutions to problems that no one else sees. She looks at it in a different way. When she’s on her game, it makes it really hard to defend her.”

At the 2:08 mark in the first half, Emma Fromm made it a 2-0 ballgame at halftime. Then, 14 minutes into the second half, Fromm found Erslan for her first goal this season, making it 3-0.

The senior now 91 career goals, 15 away from breaking the county record of 105 — set by Unioto’s Jayla Campbell in 2018.

The night’s final goal came from Morgan Harper, who scored with 10:42 left off an assist from Evelyn Crall.

All in all, Chillicothe totaled 15 shots on goal, compared to Hillsboro’s eight. The Cavaliers took seven corner kicks while holding the Indians’ offense to two.

Still, there are areas where Wickham sees improvements needing to be made.

“We always talk about it in training and if a team makes a mistake, we want the other team to punish them,” Wickham said. “You can learn from that. If we just get by and the other team doesn’t score, we don’t learn. So we want to get punished. I yell that all the time. We’ll look at the film and see where our breakdowns happened. But the girls are buying in. They’re taking accountability.”

Chillicothe will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Thursday, hosting Miami Trace in a second consecutive FAC match.

“We’re just enjoying these nights that we get to play,” Wickham said. “We played Columbus Academy earlier in the year and it got rained out. We told the girls that night that this could be it. We could’ve gotten a call the next day and had everything shut down. So we’re just taking it one game at a time and enjoying the fact that we’re together.”

BOYS SOCCER: Chillicothe 5, Hillsboro 0

The Cavaliers (2-1, 1-0 FAC) looked to be in midseason form on Tuesday, cruising to a shutout win over Hillsboro.

Chillicothe scored four first half goals, coming at the 30:55, 25:03, 18:41 and 11:28 marks. The team’s final goal took place with 7:38 left in the match.

Gabe Maimone scored twice and passed out an assist for the Cavaliers while Isaac Crawford netted two goals on the evening. Brady Wood also contributed, tallying a goal and two assists.

Chillicothe’s defense held Hillsboro to just three shots on goal, all of which resulted in saves for junior goalkeeper Jack Huggins.

The Cavaliers will be back in action on Thursday, hosting Miami Trace at 5 p.m.
