BIG RAPIDS – Big Rapids boys soccer coach Justin Fox wouldn’t say it was a perfect game on Thursday against Central State Activities Association foe Kent City.
But the Cardinals got the win and shutout which he both wanted in a 1-0 home win.
Big Rapids is now 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the league.
Senior Aden Herron scored in the second half for the game’s only goal and his third of the season.
“We had some pressure in the box and it was either a cross or throwin or something,” Big Rapids coach Justin Fox said. “It got cleared out to him and he was at the top of the box near the arc. He scored on about a 20-yard shot.”
“It was a good shot at about the bottom right,” Herron said. “I caught the goalie off guard on a longer shot. He wasn’t really expecting it.”
Luke Welch was the winning goalkeeper.
“Kent City defended very well,” Fox said. “We had a lot of trouble keeping possession. I like the win, yes. We were working hard. We were just kind of playing individuals, one person at a time, with the ball.
“We have to get to a spot where we can work together to keep the ball. As a team, we were making the game more difficult than it needed to be. We have to practice some patience.”
“We came in with very low intensity,” Herron said. “We need to bring our intensity first and not let the other team set the pace.”
“We thought were going to smoke them,” Big Rapids sophomore defenseman Jackson Heethuis said. “They came in with some fight and we weren’t prepared for it.”
Big Rapids is on the road for matches Saturday with Ludington and Muskegon Reeths-Puffer on Saturday. Next Tuesday, BR is at Tri County and is home on Thursday with Newaygo.
“Those are two tough games. Tri County and Newaygo are tough,” Fox said.
