RAMY Stream on Hulu. This dramedy series made a splash when it debuted last year for putting the experiences of American Muslims front and center. Created by the comedian Ramy Youssef, who also stars as the title character, the show follows an Egyptian-American millennial in New Jersey torn by hedonistic pleasures and his desire to reconnect with his faith. Existential questions are still swirling through Ramy’s mind in Season 2, but he’s now unpacking them with help of a spiritual mentor (newcomer Mahershala Ali). We learn more about Ramy’s family and watch as he navigates sticky situations that test his faith. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Youssef suggested that this season may spark “uncomfortable conversations” among critical viewers — for one, the trailer reveals a scene featuring a former adult film star — but it also offers a more intimate look at his character’s spiritual motivations.
THE HIGH NOTE (2020) Rent on Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play or Vudu. Consider this comedy a cross between “A Star Is Born” and “The Devil Wears Prada.” Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross), an R&B diva, is at a crossroads. Her manager (Ice Cube) is encouraging her to accept a lucrative residency in Las Vegas, implying that the world is only interested in her hits from the 1990s, but Grace is itching to create new music. She finds a cheerleader in her personal assistant, Maggie (Dakota Johnson), who, despite the humility that comes with her menial job, adores Grace and has her own musical dreams. Critics said that “The High Note,” directed by Nisha Ganatra (“Late Night”), can veer toward the sentimental and demands more from Johnson. Yet Ellis Ross anchors the movie with a well-rounded performance, making it a pleasant watch.

LUCY IN THE SKY (2019) 8 p.m. on HBO; stream on HBO platforms. This drama stars Natalie Portman as a troubled NASA astronaut who returns to Earth from her first mission to outer space a changed woman. Her quiet life with her kind but dull husband (Dan Stevens) is no match for the cosmos. So she pushes herself to prepare for the next available mission and strikes up an affair with a fellow astronaut (Jon Hamm). Her world comes crashing down, though, when she learns that he’s been seeing another woman and that he kept her from the one thing she wanted. The movie is loosely based on the real-life story of Capt. Lisa Marie Nowak, a former NASA astronaut who was charged with attempted murder in 2007 after attacking an Air Force captain.
