BISMARCK, N.D. — The Willmar Stingers bounced back from a season-opening loss to split the two-game series with the Bismarck Larks.
Willmar won Tuesday’s game, 6-0.
The Stingers play the Eau Claire Express at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Bill Taunton Stadium. Former Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire will be in attendance, throwing out the first pitch.
Asa Awbrey, an outfielder from the University of Montevallo (Alabama), was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Stingers in their win over the Larks.
Carter Howell (Augustana University) finished 2-for-5 from the leadoff spot with a run, an RBI and three stolen bases.
On the mound, Willmar starter Ryan Watson (Georgia State) struck out six, giving up six hits and no walks over seven innings.
Bismarck’s top hitter was South Dakota State third baseman and BOLD High School grad Jordan Sagedahl, who was 2-for-3.
Gardenhire was Twins’ coach from 1991-2001, taking over as manager when Tom Kelly retired. He managed until 2014, winning American League Manager of the Year in 2010. He then was a coach with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2017 and managed the Detroit Tigers from 2018-20.
Before coaching and managing, Gardenhire was an infielder for the New York Mets from 1981-85. He spent one season in Triple-A ball in the Twins organization before becoming a minor league manager.
