Marlins 10, Cubs 2: This space intentionally left blank - Bleed Cubbie Blue

There’s a saying in baseball, perhaps you’ve heard it: “Every team wins about a third of its games, every team loses about a third. It’s what you do with the other third that matters.”

This one, Friday night’s 10-2 loss to the Marlins, appears to be in that “every team loses a third” category.

Started out well, though. After an easy 1-2-3 first for Zach Davies, Joc Pederson sent Cody Poteet’s second pitch into the bleachers [VIDEO].

Davies got through the second easily but then, leading off the third, Marlins catcher Jorge Alfaro sent a line drive off Davies’ leg.

Well, he wasn’t “fine.” He gave up another hit, then Poteet moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt.

Then Davies walked two batters in a row, forcing in a run. He did record the second out, but then Adam Duvall smashed a grand slam.

The game might as well have ended right then, because 5-1 was an insurmountable lead for these Cubs. Joc briefly made it 5-2 [VIDEO].

Joc’s first homer barely made the seats. The second one — crushed!

Also:

The Cubs got two more runners on base in the third, one on a double by Anthony Rizzo, but they were both stranded.

Davies got some defensive help from Sergio Alcántara in the fifth [VIDEO].

The sixth put this game away. Davies allowed two more singles sandwiched around a groundout, but then picked the second hitter, Jesús Sánchez, off first (after review) [VIDEO].

That was good, and Davies actually had a chance to get out of the inning still down only 5-2. But then he issued another walk, and Jon Berti, who entered the game hitting .214 with two home runs in 159 at-bats... you guessed it, hit a three-run blast to make it 8-2.

Davies had allowed just one home run since April 26 until Friday night. Sigh.

Oh, and:

Dan Winkler threw the seventh, entering having allowed just two runs all year in 26 appearances. That went out the window, too, when Duvall hit his second homer of the game off Winkler with a runner on base, making it 10-2.

After that David Ross essentially cleared his bench, removing Rizzo, Javier Báez, Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras. Brad Wieck threw about a billion pitches (okay, really only 42) over the last two innings, issuing three walks but striking out five.

Summary: This was a bad loss to a bad team. Blech. Also, Marlins jerseys: Awful.

Even up close you can barely read the names and numbers — isn’t that kind of the point of having those? So you can identify the players? On middle infield plays, the only way I could tell the difference between Marlins second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. and shortstop Miguel Rojas was that Rojas was wearing neon-green shoes. Here’s hoping the Marlins wear their traditional road grays this afternoon.

Fortunately for the Cubs, all the teams chasing them in the NL Central also lost Friday — the Brewers to the Rockies, the Cardinals to the Braves and the Reds to the Padres. So the Cubs maintain the following leads in the division: One game over Milwaukee, three over Cincinnati, four over St. Louis.

The Cubs will try to even up the series Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field. Jake Arrieta gets the call for the Cubs and Pablo Lopez is scheduled to start for Miami. Game time is 1:20 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be via Marquee Sports Network.
