To start, what is the difference between a Winter Storm Watch and a Winter Storm Warning? A watch means that there is a chance of severe winter weather, which is given about 12-36 hours ahead of the potential storm. However, the timing, and where the storm will hit, is still uncertain. A warning means that severe weather will occur, and this is triggered when the National Weather Service (NWS) expects four inches of snow in a twelve-hour period or six inches in a 24 hour period. Watches are issued for Chemung, Tioga(NY), and Bradford counties. Warnings are in effect for Steuben, Seneca, Schuyler, Tompkins, Tioga(Pa), and Yates counties. Both the watches and warnings start Monday at 10 a.m. and expire Tuesday at 4 p.m.
