To celebrate Valentine’s Day, we asked several musicians to tell us their favorite love songs. Here’s what they had to say.
Mat and Savanna Shaw
It’s been almost a year since Mat and Savanna Shaw went viral for their cover of “The Prayer” — a performance they didn’t think would reach beyond their close friends and family. Since then, the father-daughter duo from Utah has released two albums. Their first single of 2021 — a cover of the classic song “L-O-V-E” — comes out on Valentine’s Day.
Mat
My favorite love song would have to be “Love of My Life” by Jim Brickman. It is the first song I played and sang for my now (thank my lucky stars) wife, Brooke. Seeing as how it convinced her to look past my many shortcomings and marry me should provide sufficient evidence for the power and impact this song carries. We sang it again as a duet on our wedding day, so it will always hold a special place in both our hearts.
Another favorite is “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran. It is a story of a different kind of love — a love that has moved past the shallows. It sings a story of growing old together and experiencing love in deeper and more meaningful ways all along the way.
Savanna
My favorite love song is “Kissing a Girl” by LOCASH. It is the sweetest song ever, and I think why I love it so much is because it goes through the stages of life! It goes from his girlfriend, to his wife, to his daughter. It is hard not to tear up listening to it!
The National Parks
The National Parks emerged on the music scene in 2013, and the Provo-based band has a big show at Vivint Arena on March 20, according to a news release sent to the Deseret News. The band’s latest album, “Wildflower,” came out in 2020.
Megan Parks — “Stolen,” by Dashboard Confessional
This is a song I want blasting at full capacity so I can scream along at the top of my lungs. It makes me nostalgic and has me remembering what it’s like to have the best summer of your life running around carefree and wild with the person you completely fell for.
Brady Parks — “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles),” Sleeping At Last version
I grew up hearing the original version by The Proclaimers and always thought of it as a light-hearted and quirky ’80s pop song. Because of that, I never gave much thought to the lyrics. When I discovered the cover by Sleeping At Last, the song completely changed for me and it honestly caught me off guard with how powerful of a love song it is.
Just the line “I would walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more just to be the man that falls down at your door” really got me. To me it represents a love that you would do anything for, and I think that’s why Megan and I chose it as the song to have our first dance to at our wedding. It’s still kind of funny when we tell people that we danced to the “I would walk 500 miles” song.
Jake Shimabukuro
Ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro rose to fame in the mid-2000s with his rendition of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” — one of the first YouTube videos to go viral. Shimabukuro will be livestreaming a Valentine’s Day concert at 6 p.m. MST on Sunday.
I think one of the greatest love songs of all-time is “Something” by The Beatles. And it plays so well on the ukulele, which was George Harrison’s favorite instrument.
I was so blown away the first time I saw Paul McCartney pull out his ukulele and perform “Something” during his world tour, and he dedicated it to George. Such a great song.
Todd Tilghman
Last year on “The Voice,” Todd Tilghman became the oldest winner in the show’s history. Since his victory, the 43-year-old pastor from Mississippi has relocated to Nashville, working with a number of people in the music industry to launch a new career. His upcoming single, “In a Heartache,” comes out on Valentine’s Day. Tilghman said he has more music on the way and a book coming out in June.
On his favorite love song ...
It’s actually not easy to pick a favorite love song. I’m going to go with ONE of my favorite love songs. I think, this Valentine's Day, I’d pick “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds. It’s just such a beautiful (musically and lyrically) tribute to how much the people we love mean to us. It’s kind of a “Broken Road” song, in a way. I made a lot of mistakes, but those mistakes brought me here.
On his Valentine’s Day single ...
This one releases at midnight Central time on Valentine’s Day. It’s a song about how love starts out exciting, but it tends to get pretty hard along the way. And if we had to go through everything we’ve gone through to get to where we are now, would we?
Jonathan Clay (Jamestown Revival)
Jamestown Revival, an Americana/rock Texas band that recorded its debut album in Utah, was scheduled to play in Salt Lake City on March 17, 2020. Like all musicians, the band’s tour got canceled a few days before, at the start of the pandemic. Since then, Jamestown Revival has been writing and recording music at home.
One of my favorites would be Guy Clark’s “My Favorite Picture of You.” It’s an honest look at love, and the fact that it’s not always roses. The inspiration for it was a Polaroid that one of Guy’s acquaintances took of his wife Susanna. She’s giving him a look that I know all too well. The song is a reminder of our most precious gift: time.
Ryan Innes
Utah-based singer-songwriter Ryan Innes appeared on the NBC show “Songland” last year, pitching his original song “Long Way Home” to Lady A. Although his song didn’t get cut by the band, it did end up hitting No. 1 on the iTunes charts when Tilghman debuted it on “The Voice.” Innes released a new single, “Creature,” a few weeks ago.
This might have been the very first love song I loved myself. Was obsessed. Sang it all the time. So perfectly sappy and longing and dramatic. That high note?! Woooo...love man.
Jeff Plate (Trans-Siberian Orchestra)
Jeff Plate has been touring as the drummer for Trans-Siberian Orchestra for two decades. During the pandemic, Plate has revived an original project, writing, arranging and engineering music for his band Alta Reign, which released an album last month.
“Beth” — Kiss
I was such a huge Kiss fan when “Destroyer” came out. This song took me by surprise because it wasn’t anything like “Kiss Alive!” But, I really liked the song. And as I have gotten older and music became such a huge part of my life, the meaning of the song really connected even more.
“Tears” — Rush
The album “2112” was a game changer for me. I was a young drummer trying to figure it out, and Neil Peart came along and showed me the way. Like “Beth,” “Tears” was also a departure from what you would expect. The lyrics can be interpreted differently, tears of sadness or tears of joy. Either way, so emotional and such a simple beautiful song. It opens your heart.
“Always” — Alta Reign
I wrote this these lyrics about loved ones lost. I pulled from myself, my wife and my guitarist Tommy Cook, and the experiences we have had with this. They are never really gone, they are always with you. And it makes the ones we still physically have that much more important.
