DURHAM, N.C. -- Over the last week since Kara Lawson was named Duke women's basketball head coach, many former Blue Devil men's and women's basketball student-athletes, ESPN personnel, Duke staff, NBA personnel, etc., have shown their love for Lawson coming to Durham, N.C.
Over the next couple of weeks, GoDuke.com will be unveiling quotes from the outpour of congratulations.
Part One:
"From the moment I saw you play in college, to working with you as a colleague at ESPN, I was always blown away by how you were so in-tune with the game, Kara. It was different. Not only did you have the personality, but you had the internal drive to be different. I have to tell you that there is nothing that makes me happier than to have you be named the next Head Coach of Duke basketball. You are a going to be a game-changer. You are a difference maker. I'm even wearing your shirt because you're a legend and your legend will continue to grow and get better at a place that I call home. Welcome to the family, Kara."
Jay Williams

"Coach K and Coach K. Hmm… I kinda like that. In all serious, I just want to say congratulations to you, Kara, on being named the new Duke Women's Head Basketball Coach. What a tremendous hire. Of course, I have to give applause to Kevin White for this decision. Kara, I've known you for a long time. I've been a big fan of yours going way, way, way back to when you played high school basketball at West Springfield High School in Northern Virginia. Of course, I tried to recruit you to Duke back then, unsuccessfully I might add. But I'd like to think that I kinda laid the foundation for this all to happen now. So that's my story, and that's what I'm going with. All of us at Duke are so proud and so excited for the new Kara Lawson era to begin. And of course, with you on board, we are better, and we are so grateful to have you. Congrats and good luck this year. We will all be there to support you. I'm looking forward to seeing you out there leading these women and having great success. Go Duke!"

"I've known Kara Lawson since she was a player at Tennessee, and I was covering the women's tournament. From the first time I met her she's just been such an impressive person. When she started her broadcast career, I got to do games with her, I got to work in the studio with her. She and I developed a terrific friendship. I've always rooted for her and followed her coaching career closely. I'm going to tell you, there is no way Duke could have made a better choice in hiring Kara Lawson. She optimizes the highest character. She'll get the very best out of all her players. She just fills every room she walks into with a ton of energy. So, congratulations Kara, I couldn't be happier for you."

"Hey, it's LaChina Robinson, ACC Women's Basketball Analyst checking in to send a note of congratulations to Duke Athletics for hitting a homerun in hiring Kara Lawson as their next Head Women's Basketball Coach. When I think about the Duke brand, I think integrity, winning mentality, pursuit of excellence and Kara Lawson has been all of those things for as long as I have known her. Which takes me back to our high school days and looking at Kara's career when she was a point guard for the late, great, Pat Summit at Tennessee, she was always a leader. Always an example-setter. She would go on to make her mark in broadcasting as one of my colleagues. She did it so effortlessly on the men's and women's basketball side because of her IQ and her brilliance for the game. She was just recently an NBA coach, but she's coached USA Basketball, she is a WNBA champion and Olympic gold medalist. This is just a great hire. Congratulations."

"Hey K Law, I just want to say congratulations on your new job, Head Coach for the Duke Blue Devils. I have to be honest, I'm wearing a little bit of blue, but I see a little bit of Indiana Fever, so it's a little bit off, but that's ok. I just want to say congratulations. It's crazy to think back and I was your first roommate back at the University of Tennessee and I remember watching ESPN non-stop. So, we had one time and that was the only time. To see where you've come from back then to where you are today and being able to be coached by one of the greatest coaches ever. Now your opportunity along with ESPN, commentating, USA basketball and most recently with Brad with the Boston Celtics. You are destined, you are designed, you are going to be absolutely phenomenal. I am so excited for you. I know that you are going to do great things with the Blue Devils, with the ladies that you are going to work with. I don't know if they know what they got in you, so, it's going to be fun to watch your journey. I'm going to be there right alongside of you. Not on the sideline, but watching you from afar of course, but wish you nothing but the best. You are going to be awesome and amazing. Congratulations, I love you and I will see you soon. Go get 'em!"
